bob12a Posted December 26, 2008 Posted December 26, 2008 Can you please explain what this might mean Thank you Fix errors as described below, and click Retry. Unable to connect to Gmail. Possible firewall configuration issue. Please check that port 995 is not blocked by your firewall or contact your system administrator for help. Google Desktop will try to connect to Gmail every 10 minutes until this problem is fixed or Gmail search is disabled. RandyL Posted December 27, 2008 Posted December 27, 2008 It appears from your signature that you may have Zonealarm for a firewall. Bob are you using Google Desktop Search or Toolbar? It's been known to be problematic and no real reason to have these addons. Quote We are all members helping other members. Please return here where you may be able to help someone else. RandyL Posted December 27, 2008 Posted December 27, 2008 Bob from what I see you have google everything. I can't pretend to know what all of google you have or what you want to bypass your firewall. You need to change your settings there to allow the apps you want to access the internet. The green checks are allowed. The red X's are blocked. The question marks are for to ask everytime. Personally I would uninstall all google applications and just check your mail via a direct link to it. The Google Chrome browser is set to ask. It's not a good one anyway in my opinion. Time to clean house of all this stuff if you ask me. Quote We are all members helping other members. Please return here where you may be able to help someone else. BeeCeeBee Posted December 27, 2008 Posted December 27, 2008 Hi Bob, I think I am beginning to get a feel for what you are doing and the problems you are having simply by reading back to previous threads and piecing things together. To begin with you have to change some downloading habits that I think you have acquired. Stop saying yes to anything and everything Google and pay very close attention to little boxes that are already checked. Very often the "suggestions" you get when you download (often in the form of an x already in a box) are unnecessary to the program you are downloading. (You do not need to download a google toolbar along with every program. In fact you do not need to download it at all.) The same holds true for icons and task bar icons and allowing everything to start when you boot up. You just need to be more discriminating in what you allow and not assume that if it is already ticked it is either good or necessary. As for your current problem I think I know what has happened. You are using Mailwasher that, if i recall, directs your gmail to it and removes it from the gmail server. You then have some Google desktop program that is seeking to find your gmail while at the same time mailwasher is diverting it to itself. I simply suspect that you have programs working at cross purposes. I would agree with Randy that you had best stick to just checking your email on your own and ridding yourself of much of this excess. You have to find a way to streamline and simplify. The firewall screenshot you submitted has not even gone a quarter of the way down the navigation bar. I can only imagine what else is there. This is not meant to be critical Bob and you are far from alone in this. Google alone thrives on all its inclusions with other programs. Quote "Familiarity breeds contempt - and children." Mark Twain
Goku Posted December 27, 2008 Posted December 27, 2008 Hello Bob. Please try and follow Barry's advice as he makes some very valid points there. There is just one thing I need to know; do you connect wirelessly or do you use a router or ethernet connection to get online? The port 995 may be closed on your computer and therefore we need to know that information to provide you with the instructions on how to open it. Post back the required information as soon as possible. -- Goku Quote
bob12a Posted December 27, 2008 Author Posted December 27, 2008 I will need some time to clean up Barry and thank you for taking the time to reply I have often wondered why so many items appear repeated. Goku Posted December 27, 2008 Posted December 27, 2008 OK Bob, I am a complete novice when it comes to Networking so please bear with me. Can you tell me who is your ISP (Internet Service Provider) and what do you do to connect online? Also, what modem / router do you use (if any)? -- Goku Quote

BeeCeeBee Posted December 27, 2008 Posted December 27, 2008 It would appear that Livebox is only a name for a series of routers used by Orange. You will need to look at any label for a model number and possible manufacturor Quote "Familiarity breeds contempt - and children." Mark Twain

Goku Posted December 27, 2008 Posted December 27, 2008 OK Bob, the simplest method will be to open the port by accessing your router's configuration page. I have tried to locate a procedure to make the task simpler but I could not find one; at least not now. Please try and find your way around if you can. Otherwise, please wait for further instructions from me or anoy other helper. Hope that helps. :) -- Goku Quote
Goku Posted December 27, 2008 Posted December 27, 2008 Oh and try disabling ZoneAlarm temporarily and see if it helps or not. Good Luck. :) -- Goku Quote
