BeeCeeBee Posted December 28, 2008 Posted December 28, 2008 Hi Chelle, You sound frustrated but we will need to know more about the problem then you have given us. Please describe what has occurred. Quote "Familiarity breeds contempt - and children." Mark Twain
chelle73 Posted December 28, 2008 Author Posted December 28, 2008 I kept getting just freeze up couldnt do any thing change mouse batteries ect anything normally tried and done a scan using avg . It found no files . My sister told me look.ed like a virus through msn . I was sending messages that I wasnt if you know what i mean . My pc gave me message last night something bout it was shutting down something to do with hard drive files being dumped . Done full factory reset this morning now still freezing and cant get back on internet either . I am on my new laptop to write this Quote
BeeCeeBee Posted December 28, 2008 Posted December 28, 2008 Done full factory reset this morning Please explain what you mean by a full factory reset. Was this a full system recovery? Did it remove your data? Quote "Familiarity breeds contempt - and children." Mark Twain
chelle73 Posted December 28, 2008 Author Posted December 28, 2008 Yes thats the one have wiped the lot . Knew it would but was last resort , I have backups of important stuff . Quote
BeeCeeBee Posted December 28, 2008 Posted December 28, 2008 It is pretty much a last resort and a shame you have gone there already but it is done. When you say it still freezing what do you mean? Where does it freeze? Does XP boot at all? Quote "Familiarity breeds contempt - and children." Mark Twain
chelle73 Posted December 28, 2008 Author Posted December 28, 2008 its coming up so far trying to get my internet provider back (sky) then it will stop . the arrow just wont move its frozen there so i have to unplug and boot up again Quote
BeeCeeBee Posted December 28, 2008 Posted December 28, 2008 Have you tried to boot XP in safe mode with networking? If not restart and tap F8 when the initial screen appears. When you get to boot options select safe mode with networking and see if you can connect without it freezing. Quote "Familiarity breeds contempt - and children." Mark Twain
chelle73 Posted December 28, 2008 Author Posted December 28, 2008 i will try that now have not done so far . will let you know Quote
chelle73 Posted December 28, 2008 Author Posted December 28, 2008 Sorry to be a pain have f8 safe mode thing done it , tried internet explorer and has now froze again saying page cannot be displayed Quote
BeeCeeBee Posted December 28, 2008 Posted December 28, 2008 Perhaps we are getting lost in the words here. To me freeze means crash. You cannot do anything but shut down. What you are describing is a connectivity issue. Is it just your browser that is not functioning? Quote "Familiarity breeds contempt - and children." Mark Twain
chelle73 Posted December 28, 2008 Author Posted December 28, 2008 no its stops doing anything i cannot even shut down have to unplug from the mains adaptor. Quote
BeeCeeBee Posted December 28, 2008 Posted December 28, 2008 Strange! What is the make and model of your machine and exactly what disks did you use to restore? Quote "Familiarity breeds contempt - and children." Mark Twain
chelle73 Posted December 28, 2008 Author Posted December 28, 2008 ita a packard bell and no disks used havent used rhem before and it worked Quote
Guest Wolfeymole Posted December 28, 2008 Posted December 28, 2008 Tell us exactly what you did when you made a complete "back to factory" recovery. Take your time as this is not text messaging and stop doing cold shutdowns on your pc, this will kill the hard drive if it has not already done so. Quote
chelle73 Posted December 28, 2008 Author Posted December 28, 2008 Ok starting with pressing f11 on start up just following the instructions on the screen . I got the initial thank you for buying packard bell ect filled the relevant details of who is to use the pc . This then brought me to the packard bell home page with the usual icons , but as its from factory settings it has got messages from norton saying out of date ( I do not use norton this came with pc for first year ) , also packard bell reckomends aol which pc also came with . I try from control panel to link to my internet connection (sky) . That is the furthest I have gotten before the pc just stops and i cant do annything more , which is why I was unplugging to restart and try again . I didnt know this would do any harm . Quote
Guest Wolfeymole Posted December 28, 2008 Posted December 28, 2008 I might be wrong but I think your Recovery partition has been damaged in some way, I'm guessing you never made any recovery disks yes at an earlier time? Quote
chelle73 Posted December 28, 2008 Author Posted December 28, 2008 No have made no recovery discs at any point , anything saved was done by email and saved on my laptop? Quote
BeeCeeBee Posted December 28, 2008 Posted December 28, 2008 (edited) Chelle can you please give us all the information you can about the machine. Is it a Laptop or a pc? Specifically what is the make, model and serial number and is it the machine that is running XP Home. Finally I want you to go into safe mode again (no need for networking) and try to run a check disc. Do this by opening my computer and right click on your c drive. Select properties and then tools. When you get to tools select check now under error checking., It may require you to reboot. If so do that and report back. We need to know if you are even able to run this check. BeeCeeBee Posted December 28, 2008 Posted December 28, 2008 Were you able to see the result of the check? Did it report any damage? Or did it just freeze up at the end? Quote "Familiarity breeds contempt - and children." Mark Twain

BeeCeeBee Posted December 28, 2008 Posted December 28, 2008 From all you describe itn would appear that your hard drive may be failing on you. Do you hear any strange sounds such as a clicking sound when the system locks up? Quote "Familiarity breeds contempt - and children." Mark Twain
chelle73 Posted December 28, 2008 Author Posted December 28, 2008 No noises . erm going to sound really stupid now and ask could it possibly be my mouse? its wirelless but just seems when i walk away and come back it will move the arrow again ? If it is then I feel so daft for wasting your time just another opption ? Quote
