If you are saying that the reason you believe the system is freezing up is because you cannot move your pointer with your mouse then I suppose it may be. Usually there is a bit more evidence before something is declared a crash.

Have you ever tried the tab key (or the windows key to open your start menu) during a "freeze."

Please before you do anything else attach a different mouse and lets rule it out at least.

Ok but as long as the system is booted up, look for a key with the windows flag on it (4 wavy boxes shaped like a flag) Press it and the start menu should pop up. You will then be able to shut down the system by using your arrow keys and enter. For that matter you should be able to access anything on the start menu that way. If you can do that during a freeze it probably is not a freeze at all.

Hi Chelle,

Thanks for the info about the make and model number of your unit - there is enough info there to work out what it is.

As a check, when your PC crashes or freezes or whatever it is doing, can you attempt to open Task Manager using keyboard controls, not the mouse.

So, when your mouse pointer stops moving press the Ctrl & Alt buttons down and hold them. Then press the Delete key whilst still holding the other 2 down.

Do that once, and if it is still working you should see a box like this

If nothing happens, your PC has frozen, and the best thing to do is press and hold the power button until the unit powers off. It's better than pulling the plug out at the mains.

If the Task Manager box does comes up, then your PC is running, but your mouse may have failed.

There is a diagnostics CD download available for your PC, look here

Downloads - IMEDIA 1427 - PB13317601 - iMedia - platform_veloce_imedia - Desktop

It's at the bottom of the screen and is called Diagnostic Tools for RAM and HDD.

You can download it, burn to CD and boot your PC from it to run some checks.

If you are confident in doing that, it would be a good idea so that we can confirm the health of the components.

I gave in and took to a friend`s shop apparantly my tower was thick with dust inside as I did not know you were supposed to have them serviced , subsequently I have blown the ram stick . He has now got me running again and advised me 2 bring it in for servicing about once a year . I am very grateful to all the help offered on here though and as soon as I get my security up and running again I wil make a donation to this site as I will more than likely be asking you guys for help in the future , once again thanks .
