Tsweb server login problem

After installing TsWeb on A server behind a Netopia firewall when connecting

from the internet no name is accepted in server name box. Tried both name and

ip address. But if we leave box blank and press login it will allow logon to

server running tsweb. we would like to have it set to where we can log onto

any machine on network from internet screen.

The error I get when using a server name or ip adress is "The specified

remote computer could not be found. Verify that you have typed the correct

computer name or ip address, and then tru connecting again."

Please advise.

Thanks,

Doug

Re: Tsweb server login problem

Hi Doug,

The name that you enter in the TSWEB server box must be

resolvable to the machine you are connecting from, *and*

reachable via port 3389. If you are outside of the office

(and not connected via a VPN) then this means a Fully

Qualified Domain Name or ip address that is valid for

the public Internet.

The other thing to consider is that there is only one port

3389 for each ip address. If you want to be able to

connect to multiple machines from the outside then you

either need multiple ip addresses or a proxy/VPN/etc. or

use different ports for each internal machine.

Windows Small Business Server 2003 has a feature called

Remote Web Workplace that does what you want and

Windows Server 2008 has a feature called TS Gateway

that will accomplish *roughly* the same thing in a little

different manner.

I Thought that you could do this with TS Web, but I guess I was wrong. Is

there anything for server 2003 that is the equivilent of TS Gateway? I only

have on public IP adress to work with.

Thanks,

Doug

Re: Tsweb server login problem

Hi Doug,

Nothing that works as easy as TS Gateway is included. You

could install a VPN or SSL VPN but that will involve more

work. There are open source SSL VPNs that are available

for free--google for more information.

Windows Server 2008 will be released Feb 27, can you wait?

Otherwise you could install the beta or release candidate

version in a virtual machine and use TS Gateway. For this

you would point port 443 to the Server 2008 ip address and

configure TS Gateway. The clients would need to use version

6 or later of the remote desktop client and have their TS

gateway set.

Sorry there is no "quick and easy" built-in solution, unless you

want to use multiple ports on your firewall and point them to

each internal machine.

Thanks for the info. I think I'll just have to set them up with a VPN

solution. They will just have to get used to that. They were using SBS2003

and liked using the remote web workplace. Thanks for the info.
