Hello, I'm at my Mum's because she has done a system restore and now her laptop wont connect to the internet. I did try restoring it to an earlier restore point but no joy.

Its XP and the router is Sagem. The network key ans everything is right because I can connect on my laptop still.

It is just continuously acquiring network address and I don't know what to do. I mean it can't be the router can it because I can connect so it muct be something to do with the settings on her laptop I'm guessing?

Hi Nicol

Welcome to Extreme Tech Support - Free PC Help

Have you been to Sagem Support yet?

Thanks :).

No, I just did there though but I think it's a problem with the computer settings rather than the router.

Hi nicola,

Please look at the easy stuff first.

Click on the little network icon in the task bar and make certain that the pc is trying to connect to the proper network and not some neighbor's.

If your network is not showing then click on view wireless networks and if it not on the list try refresh network list.

Assuming that all is ok click on properties and then internet protocol (TCP/IP)

it should look like this.

Hopefully that will solve the problem.

Hi Beeceebee, thanks.

I have checked all that. It is trying to connect to the right one and the TCP/IP connections are as you say - obtain automatically.

Funny thing though, I can't access the router's settings via IP address. It just wont connect even when it's connected to it via an ethernet cable.

Are you certain that the key has been properly entered into the PC. The fact that you can see the router from your lappy and the other is connected to the router but cannot see it makes a typo possible.

The fact that you cannot connect using the ethernet is curious though but at least double check the entry.

Ooh it's working.

I redone the network keys and it worked. Don't know why it would have changed them before though during the system restore???

Thanks all :D
