Guest Pete Posted October 21, 2007 Posted October 21, 2007 Appologises if this comes across as dump question.... I am trying to learn and use a Radius server using my PC which is running Windows XP. I can't find any free downloads of a Radius server which are simple and easy to use and that run on Windows XP. The Internet Authentication Service (IAS) is available with Windows Server 2003. Whilst I understand that "Windows Server 2003" is an operating system ... what is it's purpose ? how does it differ from Windows XP? what platform does this run ? would I be able to run "Windows Server 2003" on my pc ? Thank you for your help. Pete
Guest Mathieu CHATEAU Posted October 21, 2007 Posted October 21, 2007 Re: Windows Server 2003 Hello, Windows exist in two Big family : -XP for Workstation, end user -Server, for holding infrastructure services (AD/ DHCP / DNS / IAS...) Radius is an infrastructure service, so this feature is in the Server family. You can read an introduction here: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/windowsserver/bb429524.aspx Server family is an operating system, that's "looks like" XP, but has much more feature, and less restrictions, optimized for performance. The license is much more expensive than a simple XP. This family is intended to run on a different hardware, a server hardware. If you go on computer manufacturer, you will see that you have to choose between Workstation and Server type of products. -- Cordialement, Mathieu CHATEAU English blog: http://lordoftheping.blogspot.com French blog: http://www.lotp.fr "Pete" <vwbora@onetel.com> wrote in message news:1192937086.366053.321050@v23g2000prn.googlegroups.com... > Appologises if this comes across as dump question.... > > I am trying to learn and use a Radius server using my PC which is > running Windows XP. > > I can't find any free downloads of a Radius server which are simple > and easy to use and that run on Windows XP. > > The Internet Authentication Service (IAS) is available with Windows > Server 2003. > > Whilst I understand that "Windows Server 2003" is an operating > system ... > > what is it's purpose ? > > how does it differ from Windows XP? > > what platform does this run ? > > would I be able to run "Windows Server 2003" on my pc ? > > > Thank you for your help. > > Pete >

I found what you said more helpful than the link. It was to the point. I couldn't find details of specific platforms that the Windows Server runs on. Could enlighten me on this please. Thank You Pete
Guest Mathieu CHATEAU Posted October 22, 2007 Posted October 22, 2007 Re: Windows Server 2003 It can technically run on a simple pc or virtual machine. But the intended hardware is Servers (that can be racked), like Dell PowerEdge 2950. One of the difference is storage. Disks are high speed (10000 tr/mn), redundant (hardware RAID), which make best performance but also much expensive compared to desktop simple sata. -- Cordialement, Mathieu CHATEAU English blog: http://lordoftheping.blogspot.com French blog: http://www.lotp.fr "Pete" <vwbora@onetel.com> wrote in message news:1193048766.639307.29890@v23g2000prn.googlegroups.com... > On 21 Oct, 09:16, "Mathieu CHATEAU" <gollum...@free.fr> wrote: >> Hello, >> >> Windows exist in two Big family : >> -XP for Workstation, end user >> -Server, for holding infrastructure services (AD/ DHCP / DNS / IAS...) >> >> Radius is an infrastructure service, so this feature is in the Server >> family.
