A warm welcome back!!!!

This will be my sole contribution to this thread but if it helps, great. I have found that on my machine tapping very rarely works for me and I have to hold down the f8 fey for it to work.

No I meant options like Del, F2, F12 etc

I have a second New Computer, built by the same Computer Shop.

F8 Works fine, and on the black screen, gives you an option, what to boot to.

This Computer-Nothing.Just goes straight to Boot Menu.

Dougie

Things like Del or F2 should take you into Setup, ie the bios where the boot section is under Advanced.

F8 should take you into Safe Mode, are you telling me that you get no options like that?

Posted (edited)

Hi Wolfey.Just checked, only lasted a micro second, on the screen.

DEL Enter Setup (BIOS)

F8 Enter Boot Menue.

Thanks.

I get no options at all on this Computer.

As I said My wife's Computer does give you options.

How do I get F8 to activate Safe Mode instead of Boot Menu?

Ok try setting everything to Default in the BIOS Dougie

This is all unchartered territory for me.Not sure how to.

I can get into the Bios.

On the left select Standard CMOS features

On the right Do I select "Load Fail Safe Defaults" or "Load Optimized Defaults"?

What ever one,you say, then click enter, then "y" then exit.

Does that sound right.?

UPDATE.

Never had a chance to try your suggestion,Wolfey.

Turned on the Computer, late today and it started to load Windows, made a horrible screaming noice from the Tower, and a noise like I had put 2 discs in the burner together.Windows wouldn't load,so hard shut off,and pannicked.

Tried again and same.

Rang a Techie who does the on-site Warranty work for the Computer Shop where I bought this *&%^$$%^^.

He came, run some checks and said the C/Drive was knackered (5 weeks old)

The H/Drive is a Seagate, which he said used to be good, when they were made in TAIWAN,but quality has dropped since made in China.

He wants to change the single 2GIG Stick for 2x1 GIG Corsair Sticks as he said 2 sticks are faster.

He also said seeing he has to fit a new H/Drive and load Windows, suggested Windows Proffessional instead of Windows Home,as he says Proffessional is more stable.

He took the Tower away and I would like you Guys opinion on what he proposes.

Here are the Specs at the moment,

Windows XP Home SP3

AMD 5200+ 2.7 GHZ

Palit 61S Motherboard

GeForce 9500 GT 1GB

DDR 11 Graphic Card

Strontium Hynix DDR 800 2GIG Ram Stick

20x DualLayer Burner

Seagate 160 Hard Drive C

Samsung 500 GIG Sata 11 Hard Disc (Data)

500W Power supply.

Would what he proposes,be a benefit, or overkill? Also can you see any weaknesses in this set up, I should change now?

Thanks.

Using and old Dinasour with a 14"Screen right now. YUK.

Hi Doug, Clearly there are others who can comment on hardware configurations but I question the economics of the change.

What is all this going to cost you as opposed to getting a new PC in the post Christmas sales.

In the end you will still be looking at an out of date small monitor and less likely to make a change because you have poured more money into the system.

Hi beeceebee,This is a new Computer.(5 Weeks old)

I said I was using this old Dinosaur, while the Tower is away.

You read me wrong,mate.

The Boss won't let me use Her's.She says I might stuff it.LOL

EDIT I would say the Hard Drive and Reloading of Windows should be Warranty.

The Windows Proffessional and the Ram Sticks I would have to pay for.

My opinion - stick with your XP Home - you will have a licence for it and it makes no odds for a home user. There is a theory that XP Pro is actually a little slower as it automatically starts a larger number of services and so uses more system resource.

I don't see why anyone would swap your Home for Pro - that would mean paying out another £95 or so for a new licence - if you are not paying, who is?

As for Pro being more stable - na, don't agree - Home is fine.

Changing your one stick of RAM for two could give you very small gains in performance - say 2 to 5%, but I don't think you would see any change in reality. It's known as a Dual Channel memory setup.

Also, i don't see why he would want to change your setup.

BTW - hard drives can fail very quickly, normally it's no one's fault, just a bad one.

Thanks for that advice,Tootech.Much appreciated.:)

This sounds like the finest bunch of cowboys (rip off merchants) since the OK Corral.

They fit a HDD that dies in 5 weeks, fitted another drive that he admits are crap now and want to mess about with the memory that they fitted 5 weeks ago plus install a new OS.

I suggest you get your money back Dougie.

It seems to me they think of you as a cash cow.

I will be ringing the Teckie, first thing this morning, telling him to fix nothing, they aren't prepared to cover, with Warranty, mate.

Not worth all the extra Dollars, for the little performance,I would gain.

Your advice has saved me,added expense.

Big Thankyou.
