UPDATE.

New Years Resolution.Don't ring any Techies to come to your home.

The Techie replaced the Hard/Drive with the same brand and loaded Windows.

Found out they didn't use the Kingston Chip as Conracted, instead used Strontium Hynix. Also they were to put a Palit R78O but fitted a Palit R61S.

R61S is older. The Heatsink was gray instead of pink and the GPU,was dated 7mths ago. Got it back and failed to fire up 2 out of 10 times.Hes suspects a small red cable with black ends may be faulty as well.He used the one off the DVD Burner. You guys would know what cable he is talking about.

He also managed to lose all my backup data off the second drive.I ran recuva and couldnt retrieve any,so that's history. 80 GIGS in total. Was all there in folders 4 days ago.He denied taking the Data and said he scaned the second drive, thats all.

I was having problems with the old Computer with IE7. I asked him to tale a quick look.Came out and said it's fixed after 20 mins.

Charged me $120 and left.Went in and found he had installed IE8 Beta without my consent and changed every view to his personal liking. That annoyed me greatly.IE8 kept wanting to close, for some reason.

So Guys I have learnt a valuable lesson from this unpleasant experience.

Next time I will buy a dell.:)

That is very bad news indeed Doug. And losing all your backup data on top of that is really depressing. I am crap at hardware so I don't know what red cable you are talking about but I am sure the others will know.

Its a shame you have had a bad experience with a call out - that's what I do for a living and I know there are some good guys out there as well!

That aside, the cable you refer to is most likely the SATA cable that transfers data to and from your hard drive.

He has probably swapped it as a precaution. If it was faulty and he fitted it to your DVD drive, you may have problems with that in the future. Saying that, it should have been swapped anyway - they are cheap as chips - maybe £2 in the UK and not worth messing about with.

Internet Explorer 8.......It is Beta and having tried it myself I found it didn't work correctly. You should still be using Internet Explorer 7 on a standard system. You could uninstall version 8 if you wish.

Or you could try Firefox or Opera - both great alternatives and faster.

Opera Browser | Faster & safer Internet | Free Download

Mozilla | Firefox web browser & Thunderbird email client

I'll dig out some other data recovery programs later - it may be worth trying something else to try and recover some of your data.

That is not very good at all

indeed a valuable lesson learnt, unfortunately the hard way :(

I am sorry about your situation and loss of backup data.

The only cable that springs into my mind is a SATA cable, it is red/pink kind of colour, thin and slightly wide with black ends. But those would only be used in the HDD and the CD ROM Drive, and only cost a couple of £$ to buy. And from what I know they shouldn't cause a problem if damaged, the drive would just not show? plus I'm guessing they replaced the harddrive so they would have installed the cables etc..

You really have met the worst lot of rip-off techs i've ever heard of, sorry to hear about it :(

As for the IE8 Beta installation, that really was uncalled for and obnoxious and rude to do all that without even telling you.

Is there no "higher" people you can speak to in this company to complain and report the damage they have done to your system?

Hope this situation may find a way to be resolved in your favour

ahh scott beat me by a fewminutes :)

Doug I have run into Doctors in my life who I would not trust with a hangnail. You have found the PC equivalent and that is unfortunate.

That being said, there are also guys out there who are trustworthy, honest and competent. It would be unfair to paint them all with the same brush.

For example, if I were even in the same country as Tootech I would trust him, or someone like him, to fix anything I own and know I would get a fair deal.

I am not sure I would say the same for the manufacturers.

Thanks Guys, there are good and bad, in every Business, and wouldn't paint them all, in the same light, as this Techie.I am frustrated, because I am having difficulty, getting everything working again.By the Techie fixing one thing,a lot of other abnormal things have cropped up.I have gone back to IE7 with this new machine.

The problems I have just at the moment are that he made the Task Bar Icons huge and the task bar twice as high as normal.I can reduce the size of the Icons in the task bar,but it makes the Desktop Icons smaller as well.I need to reduce the Task Bar Icons without the Desktop Icons.

Another problem that has arisen, is when you mouse over any file, it used to tell you the file size. Now it's dead.

Opera has to close all the time.Reinstalled made no difference.Think I will delete the folder in program files and make a fresh install.Sound Right?

Can I import all Favourites to IE7 first easily?

If I use Tinypic, to upload a photo to the forum,as soon as it selects "My Pictures" everything vanishes, and popup says OPERA has to close.

Thats where I am up to, Guys, and any clues would be appreciated.

Better Days ahead.I am optimistic.:)

Taskbar

Okay, to solve your taskbar problem try these steps:

-Right click desktop

-Select "Properties"

-Select "Appearance"

-Select "Advanced"

-In drop down menu select "active titlebar"

-Set it to 25

-Click "Ok"

To change the taskbar size, rightclick it and it should say "lock taskbar" this should not be ticked, if so, click it to untick it and then you can drag the top of the taskbar down to reduce it's size.

I will edit my post if I find any more solutions for your other problems.

EDIT:

As for the file size problems, does it show all the other details except the file size or does it not display anything at all?

Folder info popup

-Open a folder

-Select "Tools"

-Select "Folder Options"

-Click on "View" tab

-Make sure "Show file size information in folder tips" AND

"Show pop-up description for folder and desktop items" are ticked.

-Click "ok"

Try these and let us know if they work, I'll get solutions for your other problems when I get back to the PC :D

Thanks for your help mate. I had all my dowloaded files, in a folder and he put all the programs back again.

No,nothing shows at all, now, when I mouse over any files.

Setting Internet Explorer to default wouldn't help I wonder.Thanks.

EDIT.Great.Mouse is working again to show File sizes.Thanks.

Unticked "Lock Task Bar"Up and down arrow appears. Holding left mouse button, and drag will not move height of task bar in either direction.I can make the Task bar dissappear, but not adjust height.

Okay, to change the height of the task bar, unlock it and then move one of the dotted verticle lines, either for the quick launch or something else, up to the top line of the taskbar, and then drag the top of the taskbar down as if normally resising it

Also, what version of Opera are you running?
