Can someone explain me what is raid 0, raid 1? What are they used for? How many raid's exist?

Thanks in advance

Hi Diurno

The idea behind RAID is that it can be used to increase performance or for fault tolerance purposes.

So, if you were to choose RAID 0, striped disks as a solution, you should have done it to increase performance. Two 500GB disks will be turned into a 1TB volume with an increased transfer speed, due to writing to 2 hard drives at the same time. But, I believe seek time increases with striped volumes.

So, you have a PC that has lots of important data stored on it, and you do back it up, but if a hard drive were to fail, your PC could be down for a couple of days. Way round it could be to create a RAID 1 array - ie 2 hard drives that are mirrored exactly. In the event of 1 failing, the other one could run the system until the faulty one was replaced. Or it could be replaced straight away with a new drive and without data loss or much downtime.

So, the choice of RAID solution depends on how you want to use it, not how many hard drives you have.

That's a simple way of looking at it, servers have many RAID setups that mean a drive can go down and the system hooks up another drive and carries on running.

Hope that makes some sense.

Yes indeed thanks for that Tootech, I also was a little unsure as to what RAID was. You learn something new every day. I am also glad it was of help to you Diurno, thanks for asking the question.
