Can anyone help please ?

I have a PC running XP.

Out of the blue I am loosing connectivity. I fire up the PC and connection to my LAN/ Router doesn't work. I have tried checking the hardware and all reports are that it is working correctly. I then delete the NIC driver and reboot.

The system spots the NIC and recognises it as new hardware and automatically installs the driver. Connectivity is then fine and everythng works fine until the next timer I power up the PC. It then has no connectivity and I newed to repeat the whole process.

I have swept for viruses before and after installation of the NIC, with no results being returned. I still have a hunch that the problem is virus related but cannot now think of what to do next.

Has nayone any thoughts that might assist in clearing up this problem ?

Hi Porky

This does not sound like a virus related issue to me, more like a hardware related issue.

Firstly did you change any settings prior to the problem? If not i would suspect a faulty NIC Are you able to swop it with a known good one? Does the pc function correctly other than this?

If the NIC checks out fine iw ould consider looking at the router next.

Have you had a power surge? this can cause erratic behaviour of a NIC (Upset failure)

Les

Turn it on first it often helps

I agree with les, swap the network card out with a diffrent make, if its a driver issue that will fix it, if its a hardware issue that will fix it.

If its a software issue you now know more about the problem and have a spare nic. <grin>.

Seriously, NIC's are cheep, buy a new one.
