Unable to set a default printer

I have a Terminal server that is being used by several people. All of them

have their profile stored on a local volume and all of them are granted

permissions through a common NT security group.

One of the users is unable to select a default printer, none of the others

has this problem. When I look at the printers she has to choose from they

are the same as what are installed on her local client. She is able to

select a default printer on her local client. In a Terminal Server session

her printers do not show a default selected. If she opens an application and

prints using the print dialog from the File menu there is no printer selected

in the dialog box but if she clicks the down arrow she can select any printer

she wants.

There is an error generated in event viewer with eventId 1109 stating "The

HP LaserJet 2100 PCL6 on mio7D84TB1 (from MILJX17ZC1) in session 2 printer

could not be set as the default printer."

The link provided Says there is no additional information about this issue

in the Error and Event Log Messages or Knowledge Base databases at this time.

another link is provided on this page that goes here:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/817870/en-us

This article just tells me that the error is incorrectly logged and to

ignore the error. The problem with that is that the user is still not able

to select a default printer.

Re: Unable to set a default printer

This is usually caused by a corrupt profile, or insufficient rights

to the profile.

933996 - A user who is logged on to a Windows Server 2003-based

Terminal Server cannot configure a printer as the default printer

http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=933996

929270 - You cannot set a redirected printer as the default printer

in a Windows Server 2003-based terminal server session

Re: Unable to set a default printer

I tried the solutions in both articles and they did not correct the problem.

I am going to try deleting the profile again and then looking to see if there

is anything kept in the registry for that profile and delete that as well.

Re: Unable to set a default printer

Okay this is what I had to do to correct this. Keep in mind I already tried

rebuilding the profile on the Terminal Server...

1. Copied complete user profile to a network share.

2. Restarted Users terminal (in this case a Dell Laptop)

3. Logged in to laptop as user with admin rights (me)

4. Over-wrote users profile with the one on the metwork share that was

copied in step 1.

5. Had user logon to laptop.

6. With user logged into laptop configured printers.

7. Restarted laptop.

8. Logged in as myself again and copied profile back to network share.

9. Deleted user profile from terminal server and had the user login to

genterate default.

10. logged user off and over-wrote profile with the one from the network

share.

11. logged user back on and now everything works.

I'm not sure why rebuilding the profile on the laptop and copying it back up

to the terminal server worked when simply rebuilding it on the Termianl

Server did not but there you go.
