Hi Bob,

Looking at your signature, I am assuming it is your Vista laptop you are referring to ?

If it came from the factory with Vista installed you may come up against a good few problems going back to XP.

Also, to go back to XP you will need an unused licence and CD, read that as costing money

Can you post the make and model number.

Personally for everday use I wouldn't recommend going back to XP. I know people do, for lots of reasons, but Vista is really more stable than XP, and more secure. I think also, once you get used to the changed menu's it actually works quite well.

Do you have problems with it that we may be able to help with?

Two other considerations to think about also Bob is that the hardware in the laptop may, and probably will, be designed for Vista only so trying to install XP may not work whatsoever.

The other aspect is that MS will be withdrawing support for XP in the not too distant future.

Will get back to you both tomorrow thanks for now

As promised now back

Thank you both again

The idea of going back to XP is so a friend of mine can use my laptop. He is very very new and at present I would like to keep him on XP as I am not up on Vista as yet but have noted both your comments above.

I am happy to loose everything on the lap top

Some info from Belarcs

The red drive below contains (untouched) the system recovery partition of the laptop as it came with xp installed

There are not normally any issues when reverting from Vista to XP hardware wise as Vista requires much more of everything than XP does - what I think Wolfey is referring to is driver support - If you remove Vista and you do not have XP drivers for your hardware available then you are in trouble.

Going from XP to Vista is easy - the other way round is not recommended - I am unsure of you can still do this now but when people were buying any form of system with Vista on and they HATED it then you just contacted the manufacturer of the system and they sent you an XP disk with a list of drivers no questions asked - as Vista is not in its infancy anymore I am unsure if this is now being done?

Bob I have to ask what on earth your on about here as the details you have supplied quite clearly indicate that Vista has a Recovery partition on drive D:

Are you saying you want to sack all that and install XP to that laptop?

Posted

Yes Wolfy that is exactly what I want to do.

The idea of going back to XP is so a friend of mine can use my laptop. He is very very new and at present I would like to keep him on XP as I am not up to teaching him Vista

Thank you

Ok fair do's but I can't understand why you would want to remove a perfectly good working OS just to show this guy the ropes.

You'd be better off buying some obscure cheap end box with XP already installed on it.

Ok everyone we will end it there I will have a rethink

Thank you all
