Multiple Daily Backups

I have a 1TB NAS device, I have my server configured to automaticaly back up

at the end of each night. I would like to setup the server to create new

backup files each night so that at the end of the week I would have seven

different backups from each day of the week.

I would also like to only store one months worth of backups, s I would like

to program the server to delete backups older than one month old.

Any ideas on how to automate this process so that it does not have to be

done manually?

You should use the Task Scheduler.

I realize that I should use the task scheduler, the problem is I do not want

to overwrite the previous backups, I want ones created everyday and then

deleted when they are over one month old.

Re: Multiple Daily Backups

You need to create one backup set for each day of the month.

The exact method depends on the backup program you use.

RE: Multiple Daily Backups

Scott:

I have used Backup Exec versions 9, 10, and 11 to do just this, only with a

one week rotation due to the size of the backups (50 to 100 gig depending on

the site). It is relatively simple to set up by playing with the media

settings. Do not allow overwrite for whatever period of time you want to

keep the backup. When that expires, BU Exec will overwrite the media with

the next backup.

The gotcha has been that large files time out the backup software when it

tries to overwrite them, which cancels the backup job. This may be an

artifact of the Infrant NAS - I actually sent my unit in to have them look at

it. They kept it for 3 weeks then sent it back saying it would be fixed in

the next firmware; then they got bought out by netgear. Meanwhile I have

been manually delting files and/or moving them to a usb drive for offsite

storage.

Best of Luck,

-Paul
