Right, just got another PC. It's all sound, working properly, but there's one snag.

The broadband leading to the new computer is supplied by an Ethernet cable, which plugs into the USB port. However, the 'net wont boot up because it says that a 'USB network interface device' cannot be found, or something along them lines.

Anyone know anything?

Hi Mersey

Welcome to FPCH

Did you install the driver for the modem?

Are you with BT eg Landline or Cable Mersey?

Ok you should have got a driver disk with the modem from either BT or whoever ISP you are with and an installation manual, would this be correct?

Just need a bit more info, that'll give us a clearer picture of how you are set up.

You have a BT landline, can you let us know which company supplies your broadband.

The modem you have - does it have name, a model name or model number?

Is it the only PC you have connected up to broadband, or is it an addition to what you already have.

The ethernet cable you mentioned - is it ethernet or maybe a USB cable

I ask as this bit is a little confusing "supplied by an Ethernet cable, which plugs into the USB port"

This is ethernet

Lots of questions..

If you can get back to us hopefully we can get it sorted :)

1. BT supply my broadband.

2. Is the modem a router, because thats what I have?

3. The computer I am talking about, is the secondary computer. A family members laptop is the main computer.

4. Apologies, it's a USB Cable.

Cheers

Ok it seems to me that you are trying to wire the second pc to the router via USB would this be correct?

If you want to hard wire it you must run an ethernet connection from the the second pc to the router.

If you do not have an ethernet connection on the second pc then you must get an ethernet card.

Look Mersey you can't simply run an ethernet cable from the router to a USB connection, it won't work mate.

You must connect ethernet to ethernet.

Then you need to set the router to see the other pc.

It may well have been at that time you had a USB modem.

Tell us exactly how you have it wired at the moment.

OK maybe this will solve this. Go to whatever the USB cable is attached to and read the label.

What is it? What does it say it is? You do not connect to Routers with USB cables.

Ok, we are getting somewhere - you have BT broadband, have 1 computer using the USB port - so far so good.

You have a new computer and are trying to connect using an ethernet cable - yes?

You probably have a BT Hub, which is as you point out a router - yes?

There at least 3 different ones I can think of, we need to know which one it is.

Is it white or blue?

Can you follow the link below, have a look and tell us which hub you have - they are noted by their version number. So, original actually v1, v1.5 and v2.0

BT Home Hub explored

If you don't have one of those hubs, can you let us know the model number - for example BT Voyager 220

Also, your new computer - is it XP or Vista.
