Hi, when I switched my laptop on this morning my desktop, toolbars, icons etc were missing & it opened on my sort of greyed out documents page.

At one point I opened a system config thing & noticed that all the services, processes & stuff were disabled. I enabled everything & had to disconnect from the power supply to reboot.

It still opened on the same page after that but the page wasn't greyed out & everything I clicked worked.

Now when I shrink the page all that is left is a black blank screen with a cursor that won't right click.

If I expand the page I can navigate from there & everything seems to work ok.

If I try clicking on Taskbar & Start Menu in the Control Panel it flickers slightly & won't open.

I've tried booting in safe mode but it is the same. I hadn't used my laptop for a day or two & as far as I remember I hadn't downloaded any updates or anything & it closed down correctly.

As you've probably guessed already, I'm a complete donkey & fairly useless, I've tried to put in everything I can think of.

It's a

HP Pavilion dv9700 Notebook

Processor - AMD Turion 64X2 TL60

Memory (RAM) 2.00GB

System Type 32bit Operating System

Vista Home Premium Service Pack 1

Any help would be appreciated.

Cheers

Hi Snooky

Have you tried using Last Known Good Config at all?

Ok you should have a diagnostic option on boot up, think it's F12 on HP, have you tried that mate?

I have just rebooted as I have an HP box and it's F9 for System Recovery and F11 for system diagnostics.

Sorry for the late reply. I tried to do a diagnostic but couldn't seem to get it to work & started to punch all the F buttons randomly in a fit of temper, during my frenzy an option to restore the factory settings with HP Advisor appeared & I took the cowards way out & started from scratch, everything seems ok now. I wonder what caused it?

....now where did I put all those passwords?

Thanks for trying to help.

PS. Whenever I have any sort of problem the first sign is that the scrolling thing on the finger pad stops working, why is that?

I'm not sure if it a HP thing or laptop thing, as my HP laptop does the same, it's generally for me, because the program for the touchpad stops working properly so I have to resolve it by restarting the program through Run. Just find out the program's name and then type it into run, with ".exe" after it and it should go back to normal.

This has happened to my boss before and we had to run an antivirus software to remove it, But to run the software i had to run it off of a USB memory stick. This then posed the problem of how to access the USB memory stick and i thin k i did this by Ctrl+Alt+Del but on work computyer can't confirm this.Hope this helps at all.
If Computers always worked i would be out of a job. This is why i love to hate computers. :)
