Its the router that came with the be broadband. Be say we can get up to 8mb, but were getting 3.5-4mb.

And yes it only effects the games online this isn't a graphics card issue or anything like that.

I play Counter-Strike : Source

Call Of Duty 4

World Of Warcraft

Red Alert 3

It doesn't matter which game i play its the same for all of them

Couple of things come to mind.

Assuming you are on ADSL

You mentioned that you have changed ISP - did you have a faster connection with your last ISP?

Also, have you checked your line to find out what speed it does support?

If you are comfortable with logging into the router you will be able to find the stats for your telephone line. If you can post them, S/N margin, attenuation and sync speed we should be able to look up the theoretical max for your line.

Have a look here for a good speedtest

And here to check the max line speed for your postcode

I logged into my router but couldn't find the things that you were saying that you needed to check.

My old isp was only 2mb but were only getting 1 hence the change, so my current internet is faster.

I did a speedtest and here were the results, not sure they are entirely accurate as i live near but a bit of a way from maidenhead.

And these were the postcode results

According to information provided by BT Wholesale, your telephone line should be able to support a 4Mbps or greater ADSL connection speed via ADSL Max.

Thanks for any help!

Since the service is new have you actually checked with them to be sure they are providing your account with 8mb service?

What's the model of the router - I'll see if I can dig out the stats page.

You are showing a download of about 3.3MB/s - that's pretty good, and a ping of 25ms - again that aint bad either.

The BT info saying 4MB/s or more is a bit misleading - as is your ISP's description of the 8MB/s service - it is up to 8MB.

Often you will only get the full speed when you live next door to the exchange. Also, it does depend on internet traffic - Saturday wil be busy and slower, Sunday 3 am will be much faster!

Going back to your original problem, have you talked to your ISP and checked your router settings? There is a setting is alot of routers called the MTU and some ISP's have specific settings - it's worth a phone call.

I'm not sure your internet speed is the issue as you do have plenty in reserve.

I have opened ports and updated my graphics card drives and still no joy, im totally lost in what to do:mad:

How and where and why have you opened ports?

You havn't let us know what model router you are using, please do that.

When the lag spikes occur it may be worth running a traceroute to try and identify where the hold up is.

Have a look at the link for info, when you have a lag, run traceroute on something like Google, and also on your gaming server if you can.

Post the results.

For all the games you have listed - stay off the American servers as your speed will be unusable - stick to the UK and European ones - what firewall are you using?

and have you set the options within the firewall for the ports recommended by the games?

If you are using Punkbuster thats normally the culprit as it slows EVERYTHING to a virtual holt if you have less that 10MB internet
