DSTM Posted January 9, 2009 Posted January 9, 2009 Hi Guys, One little problem more has arisen, sinse Dodgey Bros built this Computer. If I walk away for any lenght of time, come back, wriggle the Mouse and the Monitor remains dead,as I presume the Keyboard. Only option is to shut down tower and restart, then all is normal. Monitor was set Power off in 20 mins so I set to never, but that doesn't fix the base problem. Any clues Guys,Please.:) Quote Confidence, is the feeling I get, moments before I stuff something up.
Dalo Harkin Posted January 9, 2009 Posted January 9, 2009 Hmm - set everything to NEVER mate and see how you go - HDD's etc Quote Intel Q6600 @ 4Ghz (Watercooled)Asus P5K premium black pearl4GB OCZ Reaper 8500260GTX Join Free PC Help - Register here Donations are welcome - here PC Build We are all members helping other members. Please return here where you may be able to help someone else. After all, no one knows everything and you may have the answer that someone needs.
BeeCeeBee Posted January 9, 2009 Posted January 9, 2009 (edited) I get the feeling that we are missing something here. Are you saying that the monitor would not react to a key stroke nor a mouse or mouse only. You said you presume that the keyboard only option would shut down and restart. Is that what has actually happened? The keyboard only option is there to require a keystroke and specifically not allow the mouse to restart the monitor. DSTM Posted January 9, 2009 Author Posted January 9, 2009 (edited) Exactly beeceebee.Does not react to anything. This is a flat screen LCD Monitor.Only just started doing this. The only change to my PC I have made in the last 24hrs is permantly disable ctfmon.exe but cant see that having anthing to do with my problem. Goes into Screen Saver mode fine, and eventually the monitor turns itself off. Just cant resus. Leaving everything on never, all that happens is the monitor, doesn't enter Screen Saver mode. Would like it working like it was designed to if possible.Thanks. I will reset back to 20 mins and try again with Keyboard instead of mouse. I tried Mouse and keyboard and neither worked but will double check,to make sure Edited January 9, 2009 by DSTM Quote Confidence, is the feeling I get, moments before I stuff something up.
DirtyPolo Posted January 9, 2009 Posted January 9, 2009 Some monitors are programmed to turn off after a certain amount of time on their own, but if it has only just started doing this, then that obviously isnt the problem :P When it goes off, can you not just turn the monitor off and then on again to wake it up? And has changing th settings to "never" stopped the machine from going to sleep too? DSTM Posted January 9, 2009 Author Posted January 9, 2009 Yes changinging to never has stopped the Monitor from going to sleep. I will do some more tests and get back Guys. Thanks for your help,so far.:) Quote Confidence, is the feeling I get, moments before I stuff something up.
Dalo Harkin Posted January 9, 2009 Posted January 9, 2009 Doug - I always set them all to NEVER - if I leave my PC for any length of time - I turn the monitor off and the speakers by the power buttons. BeeCeeBee Posted January 9, 2009 Posted January 9, 2009 One final thought before you do. While it would seem you are right that ctfmon.exe does not seem to be related. It does deal with alternative input and has some effect on keyboard settings (I Think :) ) Does restoring it help. It is pretty much harmless anyway. Ctfmon is the Microsoft process that controls Alternative User Input and the Office Language bar. It's how you can control the computer via speech or a pen tablet, or using the onscreen keyboard inputs for asian languages. DSTM Posted January 9, 2009 Author Posted January 9, 2009 (edited) Ok Guys, all working again.I still don't know what caused my problem,as it lasted 24hrs,and may have been one of those Windows wonders, that happens, from time to time. Set Screen Saver to 10 mins,Monitor off in 20 mins (Power) HDD never. Tested twice OK. Dalo,I didn't know you could just switch off the Monitor, while the System was running.Much easier.I thought I may stuff something, doing that.Learning every day. Thanks beeceebeeand DirtyPolo, for you input, also Regarding ctfmon.exe. With IE7, it was driving me nuts, appearing on Shutdown,on the screen slowing everything down, while it ended. The popup gives you an option to "end now' Plenty of fixes if you have MS Office, but I have Open Office. This was happening on both Computers.Found a permanent fix, on the Net,and now it doesn't popup anymore. Was really annoying. Anyways, appreciate your quick responses, to my woes.Much appreciated.:) Edited January 9, 2009 by DSTM Quote Confidence, is the feeling I get, moments before I stuff something up.
Guest Wolfeymole Posted January 9, 2009 Posted January 9, 2009 Dougie Turn the bloody screensaver OFF mate, you don't need it as you don't have a CRT monitor. As Dave said, set all the options in Power to Never turn off. Whatever options you had before were obviously turning off the monitor and the hard drive. Regarding Ctfmon.exe if that is present on the system then you have Microsoft Office or remnants of. This frightens me as it seems you downloaded yet another piece of crap to what amounts to a simple uninstall. Found a permanent fix, on the Net,and now it doesn't popup anymore. Quote
DSTM Posted January 11, 2009 Author Posted January 11, 2009 This Computer is back to it's old games again. Will not cold boot.Have to hit the ON/OFF on the Monitor 6 or 7 times otherwise the Desktop vanishes.Hot,no problems. I realize very hard to diagnose a prob, without seeing the PC. This has to be a Hardware prob,so it's going back again to the Shop. Googled cold boot probs and can be many causes. Wolfey,I don't download Crap anymore, like the old days.:) The Screensaver is the small Windows XP one. Quote Confidence, is the feeling I get, moments before I stuff something up.
DSTM Posted January 12, 2009 Author Posted January 12, 2009 UPDATE. It turned out, to be more Hardware failure. The Techy was quite understanding, and let me sit in the actual workshop, for 4 hrs while he tested the cold boot problem. Kept having to let the Computer cool down, after each test. Turns out the PSU was faulty first, but that didn't fix it 100%. Ended up the N61S Motherboard, was faulty also, because on 2 occassions while there,it wouldn't boot up past the XP progression bar. I wasn't happy with the Motherboard choice,so updated to an AMD AA-780G,and paid the difference. The other 2 Computers are running AMD Mother boards, had no trouble,so I chose AMD. A 20"Viewsonc widescreen, caught my eye,so I treated myself to one of them, also. I only hope, I can get a decent run now,as all this, has been a pain in the butt. Thanks Guys, for all your help, much appreciated.:) Quote Confidence, is the feeling I get, moments before I stuff something up.

DSTM Posted January 12, 2009 Author Posted January 12, 2009 I felt exactly the same mate, but I figured instead of ripping strips off them,to shut my mouth, and hoped they would do something quickly for me,which they did. I hope I never have to go back.Won't anyway, once warranty has expired. Next time I will buy a Factory Computer, and just up the Memory,if need be. This has been so stressfull,on me. Mara Posted January 13, 2009 Posted January 13, 2009 Isn't it awful when one is caught, as they say, between a 'rock and a hard place' - but you did well, DSMT - and I'm so pleased the dratted thing is finally fixed and may you never have another problem with it!!! And while this isn't meant to 'slam' those that build computers, for people like us that simply want a computer with no woes and perhaps have the RAM upgraded, it's easier mentally to just buy a pre-made one from a reputable computer store, I think. Quote
DirtyPolo Posted January 13, 2009 Posted January 13, 2009 That maybe true Mara, as if you ever need quick, simple upgrades that you can do yourself, such as RAM, there are always ways of finding out your PC's specs without you building it yourself :) And alot of the time, the company you bought it off will do it for you too, it's just the matter of price difference between doing it yourself or paying someone to do it, depending on how easy that job is :) Quote Cooler Master HAF 932Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 @ 3.3GHzAsus P5K Premium Black Pearl2GB OCZ reaper 1066MHZATI Radeon HD4850Pictures!
