LifeCam VX-3000 on Windows 2003 Server

I have a LifeCam VX-3000 webcam installed on a Windows 2003 server. I

plugged the camera in the usb port on the server, the OS asked for the CD,

downloaded drivers, but, would not load the applications that come on the CD.

The applications on the CD will only load on Windows XP or Vista.

 

I am not concerned about the applications that came with the LifeCam

VX-3000, because I am trying to use the camera with another application that

can capture images from a Video For Windows source.

 

The image capture application works perfect capturing images from the

LifeCam VX-3000, even on a remote desktop session, as long as I am logged in

as an administrator. Whether I am logged in the console or a remote desktop

session, the camera will not function if I am not an administrator.

 

Obviously, I don't want everyone that will be using the application for

image capture to be an administrator of the server. Any thoughts on what

policy setting or registry setting to allow other non-administrator users to

access the camera?

I downloaded the procmon.exe It helped identify the file.

 

When the driver was installed, it stored a file it uses at:

 

C:\Documents And Settings\Administrator\WINDOWS\Videolab.ocx

 

I just added permissions for the group "Users" to this file, and the camera

works now for non-admin users.

Ough! That's not exactly the solution I would have chosen. You have

given your users write access to the *Administrators* user profile.

Apart from the security risk this creates, I also expect profile

corruption problems.

 

Did you put the Terminal Server into "install mode" before you

installed the software?

Based on this last posting, I copied the Videolab.ocx file to C:\WINDOWS\.

Set the Security for this .ocx file to allow Users to access. Changed the

registery to point to C:\WINDOWS\Vicdeolab.ocx instead of the Administrator's

copy.

 

No, I did not set the TS to install mode because every time I would try, the

software installation would indicate this software is only supported on

Windows XP or Vista.

Yes, I suspected that (the XP/Vista requirement).

Anyway, moving the Videolab.ocx file out of the Administrators

profile is a good move. What you still should check is if you get

problems when multiple users access this file simultaneously, since

the application is obviously designed for single-user access.

I'm trying to install the same webcam (VX-3000) on a Terminal server Windows 2003, but the drivers from the CD or from the web are not loading.

 

Can you tell me which drivers you are using, where you get it and how you install it ?
