smithandrew12 Posted January 11, 2009 Posted January 11, 2009 My pride and joy is up it ...me laptop was plugged in via the power adapter on hibernate the wife said she noticed the lights dip a bit and when i went to try me laptop it was dead .nothing at all ..at first i thought maybe just maybe the fuse had blown on the plug but there would have been some charge in the laptop to kick it up but nothing ...now before i do anything would like some opinions as to what the most likely problem is am thinking power supply myself ..if it was a pc i would fiddle around but at this point never stripped a laptop ..so dont know if the power supply is easy to get at..or have i fryed the motherboard Quote
Tootech Posted January 11, 2009 Posted January 11, 2009 First thing to do is disconnect the power adapter and remove the battery. That will make sure that it has been fully shutdown. Refit the battery, plug in the power adapter and try it. No joy, hold down the power button for at least 4 seconds, let go, try again. If it still won't start and you know the power adapter is ok and the battery does hold charge then you are looking at something internal. Is the power socket ok - does it play up when you plug the adapter in - sometimes they go faulty and work intermittently. The mainboard doesn't house a power supply, all the work is done in the mains adapter. You could do to test the one you have or borrow one just to make sure it is not that at fault. If it is a mainboard fault I'm afraid it is a specialist job. Stripping them down to that level, replacing a board and putting it back together so that it works and there are no spare parts left over is a challenge for a seasoned techie. Quote
smithandrew12 Posted January 11, 2009 Author Posted January 11, 2009 oooh dear the more i think about it the worse it gets..if it is just the power adapter there should surely have still been some charge left in the laptop as it was charging at the time ..though have not been able to test the adapter as yet as have nowt to test it on.. the only possible thing that may points to it being the adapter is the fact there is absolutley no power either getting to or showing on the laptop what i mean is when i plug the adapter into the laptop there is normally a little light showing the connection and i am hopeing even if the mainboard was upit that these power indicators would still work ...or am i just living in dreamland Quote
BeeCeeBee Posted January 11, 2009 Posted January 11, 2009 Had the same issue once before and it may well have been discharging while the adapter was attached. It is a laptop so just take it to any reputable shop and they will have a mains adapter that fits for a try. In my case that is all it was. Quote "Familiarity breeds contempt - and children." smithandrew12 Posted January 12, 2009 Author Posted January 12, 2009 cheers all.. just had the adapter tested and its buggered many thanks to you all...just need to find a cheap supplier for the thing now once again cheers for you help andy Quote
smithandrew12 Posted January 15, 2009 Author Posted January 15, 2009 and things just get better...got a new adapter its a general fits all type ..coz its cheaper..its the right volts watts amps ...when i first connected it it started ok but then i had to disconnect and run off the battery and within 20 seconds it came up low battery and shut down it had been charging for over 2 hours prior now i cant get it to boot up as it starts to boot then shuts straight down ..it has a battery light on but is obviously not charging...i realise the first conclusion is the battery is shagged but should i not be able to run the laptop off the adapter even if the battery is shagged ...
