decemberboy Posted January 11, 2009 Posted January 11, 2009 Hi I was wondering if it's possible to connect an old Windows Millennium PC to a Belkin N1 wireless router? I use Virgin Media as my Internet provider. I have the wireless router running no problem with my Vista laptop but want to connect my old PC to it as a second computer to use. The PC would be wired to the router. Now the PC is an old Windows ME machine with no Ethernet socket so I tried to connect it using a USB to ethernet converter but no joy. The software that came with the router states that it will not work on anything earlier than XP but is that not just the pC you install the router on? I'm really sorry if I haven't explained this very well but this is the first time I have tried to set up a network of sorts so don't really know what I'm doing! Thanks! Quote
Tootech Posted January 11, 2009 Posted January 11, 2009 I am guessing that the Belkin software you refer to is for router installation, media streaming etc. It's a networking device and will work with any PC capable of networking. Sounds like you need a Network Card for your PC - like this.... D-Link DGE528T 10/100/1000mbps Copper Gigabit PCI Card for PC - Ebuyer You'll probably be able to find one cheaper locally to you - the one I've linked to is not cheap! Install it and if you need to, install TCP/IP on your computer and they should hook up just fine. You may need your Windows ME installation disk and from memory when you install a network card Windows will ask you to insert your ME disc to copy networking files over to your PC. Quote
decemberboy Posted January 11, 2009 Author Posted January 11, 2009 Okay thanks very much. I was using one of these to get round the problem of there being no Ethernet port LUPO USB to LAN Ethernet Network RJ45 Adapter: Amazon.co.uk: Electronics & Photo Which I thought did the same job as a network card or do I need a network card too? I really am a novice when it comes to stuff like this! Thanks again. Quote
Tootech Posted January 11, 2009 Posted January 11, 2009 You would use one or the other. Really can't say why your adapter didn't work as I don't have any experience of them. It may be that you still need to install TCP/IP on your computer, but I cannot say for sure. Have a look at link below to install TCP/IP - it could be all that is needed to get your adapter running. stain Posted January 11, 2009 Posted January 11, 2009 i'm not really sure if it's the same on me but on win 98 u had to go to internet options/connections/setup. but 1st u should go device manager and make sure it installed correctly. Quote
