Hi there,

I signed up with a new ISP provider and since then have been unable to play online games (ie Everquest2, LOTR, Vanguard etc). My web browsing and downloading of files have no issues. LOTR can download the patches without issue but when I log in I cannot connect to their login server, with everquest it goes to login server first and I can't get connected.

Here is what I see with my PC

IP address assigned by my ISP is 192.168.2.x

IP address when using a website to check my ip number 24.215.x.y

When I do a traceroute to any of the game servers from my pc it can find the servers easily. When I do a reverse traceroute (using a website to trace back to my pc from the site) the path is lost 1 or 2 hops away from me.

I am wondering what ideas people may have as to what this issue might be. Whether it is a port issue (i've sent the port numbers used by the games to my isp provider and they are going to check if they are open/closed) but I don't think that is the issue.

Is it reasonable to think that the difference in IP's is what is causing my trouble, and if so what can I do to fix it.

Thanks for all your suggestions/brainstorming!!!

Tanya

The different IP addresses will not be causing your problem Tanya so don't worry, as the 192.168.2.x is the IP between your PC and your router.

and the other IP address, 24.215.x.y will be the range of IPs that can be assigned to your Pc when you connect to the internet.

I, myself cannot offer much advice on this issue as I do not have the knowledge but we do have people who will able to get back to you with some ideas and/or solutions :)

The IP 192.168.2.x is the actual IP number my ISP had me hard code into my network card, i'm not using a router. UTP cable goes from my network card to my ISP's CPE

Can we grab some info about your setup

Who is your ISP, an is it an ADSL or cable connection.

What equipment do you use to connect to the Internet - so for example some people use a Speedtouch 330 modem, connected to the computer using a USB cable. Others use a router connected with an ethernet cable to the computer.

Do you use a firewall and antivirus software , if you do what do you use.

The IP address 24.215.x.x is the IP your ISP assigns to your equipment, and is the IP all traffic to your computer from the Internet will see.

The IP address 192.168.x.x is a local network IP range - nothing on the Internet can see these addresses.

I am guessing you have some kind of router as that way you would refer to 2 different IP addresses. A router will use something called Network Address Translation (NAT) to send information from the 24.215 address through to the computer at 192.168 address.

Normally the 192.168.x.x address of your PC is set automatically by the router, but I think your saying that your ISP has set it manually.

Hope that makes a bit if sense, let us know the other info when you can.

It is a WiFi wireless internet connection. There is a reciever on my roof which is wired by UTP cable to a CPE box by my computer. A UTP cable goes from that CPE box to my computer. There are no routers here that I use to connect. I have turned off all firewalls/anti-virus etc while trying to get the games to work.

Yes, my ISP had me set the 192.168.2.x number manually into my computer.

192.168.1.1 as suggested will not work,

go to start then run see if you can ping 192.168.2.0 then try 2.1 and even 2.254 what ever one you get a reply from is most likely your router>modem.

or try ipconfig /all

note down the default gateway and try that in your browser

web based configuration maybe turned of and you may have to do it through telnet.

what is the make of box you are using is there any model etc on it.

can i ask why you need to hard code an ip address into your settings.

to clarify the 192.168.2.???? is your ip address the router>modem will give you via dhcp (this wil lbe your private ip address) the other ip you gave which was 24.215.x.x qill be the ip address your router>modem will have once connected to your isp gateway.
