Mara Posted January 11, 2009 Posted January 11, 2009 Please forgive me for popping into this thread but I too am wondering about what causes a case fan to only work when a computer boots. Thanks so much!
Guest Wolfeymole Posted January 11, 2009 Posted January 11, 2009 You speak of his thread here Mara yes? http://extremetechsupport.com/forum/power-supply-units/5170-psu-maybe.html Well there really would be no point in the fan being on all the time, like all PC fans they are there to dissipate heat when the PC boots and gets up and running.
Mara Posted January 12, 2009 Author Posted January 12, 2009 Yes, and thanks so much again, our Wolfey ... I'd just noticed that there apparently hadn't been a post made actually answering the members question ...and I love to learn stuff, too. Thanks again, kind man!
Dalo Harkin Posted January 14, 2009 Posted January 14, 2009 Most fans do run all the time - its just the speed that varies - unless you have an old Vantec tornado and they sound like a hurricane is inside your pc - one of the loudest noises I have ever heard from a PC - even over my Linkin Park :D Intel Q6600 @ 4Ghz (Watercooled)Asus P5K premium black pearl4GB OCZ Reaper 8500260GTX Join Free PC Help - Register here Donations are welcome - here PC Build We are all members helping other members. Please return here where you may be able to help someone else. After all, no one knows everything and you may have the answer that someone needs.
Guest Wolfeymole Posted January 14, 2009 Posted January 14, 2009 Most fans do run all the time What? Are you saying that the fan is running when the box is off Dave?
DirtyPolo Posted January 14, 2009 Posted January 14, 2009 No, I think he means that once the PC is switched on, all the fans are on, they don't stop and start whilst the system is turned on. Just that sometimes you may not realise it as the speed varies so they may be very quiet. BeeCeeBee Posted January 14, 2009 Posted January 14, 2009 Isn't it nice how they say whilst when replying over here. It is almost as if they believe that us North Americans actually understand. Ok so the bottom line is computer on - fan on. Wax on -Wax off. Or is that a different movie? "Familiarity breeds contempt - and children." Mark Twain
Mara Posted January 14, 2009 Author Posted January 14, 2009 Yipee, someone that speaks 'my' language - I understand wilst perfectly - huge smile! From the moment I booted my new computer (Sony Vaio) it was loud - and no laughing please when I confess I had no idea it must have been the fan that was the cause - gentle grin. Now my noisy computer actually does me a favour - for when it changes from just plain noisy to sounding like a small jet engine trying to take off, I know it's time to take the poor thing apart and clean it thoroughly. May I ask another question about fans/computers, please? Realize fans are to keep the computer's brain from overheating ... but surely they would have an easier time if both sides of the computer tower were open (with those wee holes), than just one side?
Guest Wolfeymole Posted January 15, 2009 Posted January 15, 2009 but surely they would have an easier time if both sides of the computer tower were open (with those wee holes), than just one side? But then some clown will poke a screwdriver through the holes, make contact with the underside of the board and the metal case and, well you've guessed it, no fan sounds whatsoever. :D
Dalo Harkin Posted January 15, 2009 Posted January 15, 2009 Taking the sides off the case is only really good for diagnostic purposes - if you suspect that the PC is overheating and you whip the sides off the case and it doesnt keep shutting down then YES its a case of too much heat. BUT the inside of a case is actually kept cooler with the sides on - if the fans are working as they should - Wolfey - you been sticking screwdrivers in cases again :D Intel Q6600 @ 4Ghz (Watercooled)Asus P5K premium black pearl4GB OCZ Reaper 8500260GTX Join Free PC Help - Register here Donations are welcome - here PC Build We are all members helping other members. Please return here where you may be able to help someone else. After all, no one knows everything and you may have the answer that someone needs.
DSTM Posted January 15, 2009 Posted January 15, 2009 (edited) Fixed my GPU overheating Problems.:D http://i43.tinypic.com/sm67ab.jpg Edited January 15, 2009 by DSTM Confidence, is the feeling I get, moments before I stuff something up.
Dalo Harkin Posted January 15, 2009 Posted January 15, 2009 lol - just to clarify this will have a negative effect on cooling as there will be lots of pressure in the case - not good for cooling temps - and it will be noisy and each fan will use 10W of power  That being said they did a neat job of the cabling - well from the outside :D Intel Q6600 @ 4Ghz (Watercooled)Asus P5K premium black pearl4GB OCZ Reaper 8500260GTX Join Free PC Help - Register here Donations are welcome - here PC Build We are all members helping other members. Please return here where you may be able to help someone else. After all, no one knows everything and you may have the answer that someone needs.
DSTM Posted January 15, 2009 Posted January 15, 2009 The New Towers I have, each have an 8" Variable speed fan in the side Cover. The Computer Shop forgot to hook up the fan,on one,and the GPU temp was 68C,which had me worried. They hooked it up and now the GPU is 46-48C. So getting a fan in the cover, would help to a degree,in these old design Towers.IMO. Same Shop Wolfey. Confidence, is the feeling I get, moments before I stuff something up.
DirtyPolo Posted January 15, 2009 Posted January 15, 2009 I agree that a fan in the side/case is best :) It just depends on your air flow, and make sure you have a good equal pressure on your case. You want as much air going in as there is going out, or maybe a little more cooler air going in. And I also believe it is essential to have an extracting fan at the top of the case as hot air rises as we all know and if strnog enough it could pull all the warm air out from around the CPU, which is good :) and an extracting fan at the back, near the top somewhere of course :) Funnily enough this is my Physics A level project, finding the best fan setup for maximum cooling in a PC case :) Cooler Master HAF 932Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 @ 3.3GHzAsus P5K Premium Black Pearl2GB OCZ reaper 1066MHZATI Radeon HD4850Pictures! Dalo Harkin Posted January 15, 2009 Posted January 15, 2009 What? Are you saying that the fan is running when the box is off Dave? Some PC's do have the ability to do this Especially on 'gaming machines' the fans run on for 2-5 minutes after you turn the PC off so that the components do not fry :D Intel Q6600 @ 4Ghz (Watercooled)Asus P5K premium black pearl4GB OCZ Reaper 8500260GTX Join Free PC Help - Register here Donations are welcome - here PC Build We are all members helping other members. Please return here where you may be able to help someone else. After all, no one knows everything and you may have the answer that someone needs.
DSTM Posted January 15, 2009 Posted January 15, 2009 Tower internals, could be positioned so much better, than they are now,so they run much cooler.Cases also need to be designed better,IMO.:) Confidence, is the feeling I get, moments before I stuff something up.
