Can I use existing win2k cals on a new wink3 server?

Hi all,

Sorry for such a basic question, but after an hour of sifting

through Microsoft's website, I am no closer to an answer...

I have a network win one win2k server, and 30 per user cals. There are

no other servers on the network.

In the near future, I will be adding a win2k3 server. My question is:

can my existing 30 per user cals be used to access this new server, or

do I need to purchase 30 new cals? Can you please point me to where

the answer is documented on MS website? Thank you.

Al

Who's doing the authentication? As long as the W2K server is the primary

authenticating DC then your users cals are ok. You can add as many W2K3

servers as you want as log as they are logging into the W2K domain.

Re: Can I use existing win2k cals on a new wink3 server?

Rocker,

I would like my win2k server to remain the PDC and to continue

doing the authentication.

When you say "you can add as many W2K3 servers as you want as log

as they are logging into the W2K domain," I assume you mean when the

users are logging in. This is where I get confused.

Microsoft documentation says that in order to add a w2k3 server to

a 2000 AD Domain, I have to prepare the 2000 AD Domain with the adprep

utility (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/325379). Once I do this, is

my domain still a 2000 AD Domain?

If my domain remains a 2000 AD Domain after running adprep, can my

new w2k3 server be a backup domain controller?

Thanks

the W2K is the DC that is doing the "authentication" of your users logging

in correct? It is the first DC online correct? Your users login to the W2K

domain correct? User cals are needed on the "authenticating" domain

controller which is your W2K server. When you add additional servers, W2K or

W2K3 as long as your W2K server has enough user cals then you are ok. Keep

in mind that when you add additional servers the "built-in" 5 licenses do

not count towards your user cals.
