Guest ctowndu33 Posted October 29, 2007 Posted October 29, 2007 Brand new install of W2K3 on a 2 gb RAM, 3.2 Ghz processor. When we try and copy over large files (2Gb plus) the server does fine for about half the file and then the System process immediately goes from 15-20 percent to a solid 99. The server becomes ridiculously slow and the file copy goes from about 2 minutes to 200+. I'm out of ideas other than potentially hardware. I've replaced cables, tried different NIC, different ports on the switch. Is there something in the OS that could cause this thrashing? Thanks in advance!
Guest SBS Rocker Posted October 30, 2007 Posted October 30, 2007 Re: Copy Large Files Try this tool. I moved over 8GB in a matter of minutes and it also has a synch feature and will copy open files. http://www.goodsync.com/land/land.php?affid=goog8&frm=frame14 "ctowndu33" <ctowndu33@discussions.microsoft.com> wrote in message news:CDDBA85B-C6D2-435A-83B5-365EAB7CE4FC@microsoft.com... > Brand new install of W2K3 on a 2 gb RAM, 3.2 Ghz processor. > > When we try and copy over large files (2Gb plus) the server does fine for > about half the file and then the System process immediately goes from > 15-20 > percent to a solid 99. Guest ctowndu33 Posted October 30, 2007 Posted October 30, 2007 Re: Copy Large Files Thanks for the tool, I'll have to try it out! Unfortunately I'm not necessarily looking for a work-around. The main problem is that we can't do restores from our backup solution because of this issue and this is a file server. We really need to get it fixed. I've now replaced the RAM and it didn't work. Guess I'm going to have to place a call for the system board, I'm pretty much lost as to what it could be. "SBS Rocker" wrote: > Try this tool. Guest SBS Rocker Posted October 30, 2007 Posted October 30, 2007 Re: Copy Large Files It's really not a workaround but a better alternative. How are you attempting to copy this 2GB file? Drag and drop? Have you tried xcopy? Guest ctowndu33 Posted October 31, 2007 Posted October 31, 2007 Re: Copy Large Files Nothing at all in the event viewer. I've tried Robocopy and it does the same thing. Same with a restore from backupexec. Drag and drop gives the same. Any time I try and do something with a large file it just gets crushed by the system process. Physical memory looks normal the CPU just gets thrashed. Guest ctowndu33 Posted October 31, 2007 Posted October 31, 2007 Re: Copy Large Files No, none yet. We just rebuild it so we decided to keep it off to see if that was a factor. Still happening and driving me nuts! Guest SBS Rocker Posted October 31, 2007 Posted October 31, 2007 Re: Copy Large Files Can I ask what type of file or files are these? Is it a database file where it may be opened and being used in during the process of you copying it? Are you copying it from one server to another or to a different location on the same volume? Guest ctowndu33 Posted October 31, 2007 Posted October 31, 2007 Re: Copy Large Files In particular, we have a 2gb ghost file that we are trying to restore from tape through Veritas. When it failed, we restored it to the local disks on the backup server and then tryied to robocopy, drag-to-disk, etc. over to the new server. All failed. Guest Ben Posted October 31, 2007 Posted October 31, 2007 Re: Copy Large Files My experience shows these tools work fine and do not exhibit this behavior. (Robocopy, drag-drop, xcopy) I would start looking into a possible hardware problem. I regularly copy 17GB files using robocopy from and to w2k3 and XP and never have problems. My transfer speed is great over Gigabit. To prove it to yourself, move to set of "working" machines and try the same tools. Guest SBS Rocker Posted October 31, 2007 Posted October 31, 2007 Re: Copy Large Files I was thinking about that whether or not he was on a 100MB or 1GB switch. Just something to cinsider if you plan on this being a regular everyday task.
