double click CTRL

On my main comp (xp) no matter what page I am on I double click CTRL and it brings up a very handy google search box

 

I cannot remember how I got this handy item and would like to enable it on my laptop (vista still learning)

Bob how do you double click control? Do you mean that this pops up when you hit the control key twice?

 

Do you have any google toolbars installed?

 

My last question--- how did you find this in the first place?

Yes BC that is correct double click the control bar and up pops a google search box in the middle of my screen

the only toolbars I have installed in the navigation toot bar

I have downloaded google desktop now but still cannot get it to quick search by double control clicking no idea where to look

Okay Bob, follow these instructions:

 

Provided you have the google gadgets bar on the right hand side of your screen up;

 

Click on the little arrow, the middle button, which will open the menu

 

Click on Options, this will open the options page in a new Browser window or tab.

 

Click on the heading "Display"

 

And the very top option should be for the "Quick Search Bar" make sure this box is ticked

 

Click on Save Preferences and then it should work fine :)

I believe he means the ctrl key, as I have downlaoded google desktop and that's exactly all you have to do, double tap the Ctrl key and up comes a search bar in the centre of the screen :)

Having followed your very clear instructions above when I got to Quick Search Bar the box was already ticked.

 

On double clicking CTRL no search bar appeared

 

I rebooted still no search box

 

Removed the tick

saved preference

rebooted

replaced tick

saved preference

now all is working fine

Bob - lol at you thinking it was sarcastic -

Google desktop takes quite a few hours to 'index' all your files - depending on how many files you have this can take up to 10 hours, when it is done the search function will work - if you look in the bottom right taskbar there is the Google globe right click it and then under indexing there are the options - always best to check the status before you re-index :)

I never need to search my computer for anything :( and I have the vista sidebar if I need gadgets :P [whch I don't use]

 

But I'll keep it, just for you, just wont run it unless needed :)

It searches your whole PC emails included for whatever you type in - if for example you keep all your internet buys in a folder and you need to find it fast then its there at the snap of pressing CTRL twice :)
