Hi Alan and welcome to Extreme Tech Support - Free PC Help.

In order to give you the best chance at a favourable reply I am moving this thread to our browser forum.

Feel free to post a new introduction if you would like. :)

Hi again :)

Are these pop ups you are getting or are you being redirected to another page?

Please describe what is happening.

What browser are you using?

It may be a simple matter of setting your pop up blocker or a more serious problem such as a malware infection.

Alan,

A pop up is a window that comes up in a browser when you are on a site that creates it.

A pop up will not change the page you are on. It will come up on top of it.

Does your page change when you get this pop up and how often does it happen.

There is a pop up blocker in IE7. You go to "tools" on the top and then go to the privacy tab. The Pop Up blocker is about half way down. Is it turned on or off? Make sure it is on.

If that does not solve your problem you need to be more specific about what you are seeing.

I still don't know if you are getting pop ups or redirects. I will try again.

If you are getting a pop up it will be a smaller window on top of the site you are viewing.

If you are being redirected then the whole page will change.

If you can, post a site where this occurs. (the url or address that appears in the bar on top of the browser page.)

Alan we need to see what you are seeing.

I want you to go to a page where this happens.

Then hit the PrtSc key.

The go to programs > accessories > you will find a program named PAINT.

Open paint and click on edit and paste.

A copy of what you want us to see should appear in paint

Save it to your desktop and come back here to reply

Click post a reply (not quick reply) and go down to manage attachments and click on it. where it says browse select the file you saved and click upload and the file should paste to your reply.

If you cannot do this or find a better way to explain what is happening there is very little we may be able to do.

Alan, what beeceebee means is, when you are browsing, and this "pop up" appears...

Does it appear in a new tab, a new Browser window or in the one you are currently using?

Hello Alan, does it appear after you hover over another image?

Can you tell me the website that your screenshot came from? i.e. that image you posted.

What website were you on when that appeared?

when im browsing they just pop up at the back they are popups for ipods and stuff like that. it dosent happen on one they pop up on most sites. ive just clicked on ebay and straight away it came up at the back of ebay an asda advertisment.
Posted (edited)

I don't get what you mean by, "at the back of ebay"

Do you mean on another tab? if so, when this happens, can you stay clicked on the ebay window,

Press the PrtScr(Print screen) button, (without the windows key)

Then click on the Start menu button,

Go to all Programs, or Program files, which ever it is called,

Then Accessories

Click on "Paint".

When Paint open's up, press Ctrl + v and your screenshot should appear in the program,

click file > Save As and type in a file name,

On the box below the filename, click the little arrow, and select JPEG

Then click Save.

Then come back to here, click on Post Reply, [NOT Quick Reply]

Scroll down to the Manage attachments button and click it, a new window will appear.

Click on Browse and find the file that you just saved, then click open

On the small window again, click on upload

Submit your post :)

And can you double-check for me that your popup blocker is indeed on by following these steps: :)

1. Click the Tools menu

2. Click Pop-up Blocker

3. Click Turn on Pop-up Blocker

(If already on, it will offer an option to Turn off Pop-up Blocker)

4. Confirm by clicking the Yes button.

Whilst you are in the Tools menu, please can you click on "pop-up Blocker Settings"

And then please select your Filter level to "High", (as shown in image below)

click on "Close".

then browse to a site that used to give you a popup and tell me if it still comes up :)

hi sorry for being so slow, do not know how to do the paint bit ive done that popup thing but its still happening.
Posted

Okay Alan, forget the screenshot, but details on how to do one are in my previous post.

The next step is to check your systemm for Malware/Spyware.

To do this, please follow these steps:

  • Malware is software designed to infiltrate or damage a computer system without the owner's informed consent.
It is a combination of the words malicious and software.
The expression is a general term used by computer professionals to mean a variety of forms of hostile, intrusive, or annoying software or program code.

  • Required Cleanup Steps
    1. Disable the Spybot Search & Destroy TEA TIMER if you use it and if it is enabled
    2. Run a Temporary file and cache cleaner (ATF)
    3. Run 2 Anti-Malware scanners (Listed Below)
    4. Run an Online Anti-Virus / Anti-Malware Scanner (Listed Below)
    5. Clear out old System Restore points
    6. If continued Malware type activity is present you may be asked to post a TrendMicro™ HijackThis™ Log file, do not do so unless requested.

The reason to run multiple scanners is to ensure that no single scanner is missing something.

The time it takes will vary depending on your system and your internet connection speed.

Typically the SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes scanners will take between 10 to 90 minutes.

The ESET online scan should take between 1 to 3 hours.

In most cases, these scans will suffice to clean and disinfect your computer.

Heavily infected systems or slower PCs can take much longer to scan and clean.

For best results print the following instructions and bookmark this Web page

To keep this guide printer-friendly, use your cursor to highlight the contents below.

From your browser select File - Print and in the printer dialog box under "Print range"

click the
Selection
choice to print out these instructions for removal of malware.

STEP 1

  • Disable Spybot Search & Destroys' TEA TIMER: (if installed, if not go to Step 2)

    1. Run Spybot-S&D in Advanced Mode.

    2. If it is not already set to do this Go to the Mode menu select "Advanced Mode"

    3. On the left hand side, Click on Tools

    4. Then click on the Resident Icon in the List

    5. Uncheck "Resident TeaTimer" and OK any prompts.

    6. Restart your computer.

STEP 2

  • Follow these instructions carefully.

  • Download ATF-Cleaner from
to remove un-needed temporary files from your computer that may contain malware.

  • When you run ATF-Cleaner, check the items as shown below for Main.

  • For FireFox, be sure to click on the FireFox tab on top and check the items as shown below for FireFox

  • NOTE:
If you don't have FireFox or Opera installed then they will be grayed out and can be ignored

  • Then click on "Empty Selected".

STEP 3

  • Install and run the free version (not the Professional version) of SUPERAntiSpyware from

    • Accept any prompts to allow SUPERAntiSpyware to install the latest rules and infection definition files.

    • You do not have to send them your e-mail address, just click next.

    • You can leave the automated check for updates on.

    • You can uncheck "Send a diagnostic report to research center" if you don't want to send the information.

    • DO NOT
allow SUPERAntiSpyware to protect your Home Page settings.

    • On the
      Top Left
      select the
      Scan your computer
      button.

    • Make sure there is a CHECK MARK on all
      Fixed Drives
      .

    • Click "Perform a Complete Scan". Click "Next" to Repair issues found and reboot the computer when prompted to do so.

STEP 4

  • Install and run
    Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
    from

    • Accept all defaults for the installer

    • Allow the program to update the definitions

    • Click on the
      Quick Scan
      and click Next.

    • If any items are found allow it to clean them and then Reboot your computer.

__________________________________________________

STEP 5

  • Run an online scan with ESET from

    • You
      must
use Internet Explorer for this online scan. FireFox, Opera, etc will not work for this scan.

    • If your computer is running Window's Vista, then you
      must first
start Internet Explorer as an Administrator. To do so, right-click on the
      Internet Explorer
icon in the Start Menu and select "
      Run as administrator
" from the popup context menu.

    • Accept the terms and click "Start".

    • Once the scanner is ready, check "Remove found threats" AND "Scan unwanted applications".

    • Click "Start" to begin the scan.

    • When completed restart your computer

Make sure your internet firewall security is enabled, and then please return to Extreme Tech Support - Free PC Help and tell us how the computer seems to be operating.

At that time, you will receive instructions to assist you in removing malicious programs from your Add/Remove program list if warranted.

After you have run these programs, scans and tests your system should be fine and you should recieve no more popups.

Regardless if this is successful or not, I must suggest to you to change your Internet Browser as Internet Explorer is not as safe as it used to be.

A safer and popular, easy to use web browser is Mozilla FireFox, free to download.

You do not HAVE to take this advice, do what you want to, it's just a suggestion :)
