mikefred Posted January 15, 2009 Posted January 15, 2009 XP Home Edition SP3 running XP Office Pro. Mesh PC AMD Athlon 64 3000 1.5 meg RAM Can anyone help with the attached error message. If the machine is not being used screen saver comes on for an determined period then the system crashes and reboots to the windows logon. The attached message appears soon after logging on and a crash report sent to Microsoft. Processes running under Task Manager show 50+ processes and I'm not sure if this is part of the above problem nor how or what to close down. Quote
BeeCeeBee Posted January 15, 2009 Posted January 15, 2009 (edited) oca.microsoft.com is the online crash analysis site for windows. Based only on what your are saying, it appears you may be having 2 separate problems. The crash itself and the inability to report it. Are you using MS office? Are you having any difficulties when browsing or having any unusual events beyond what you have described? Edited January 15, 2009 by BeeCeeBee Quote "Familiarity breeds contempt - and children." mikefred Posted January 16, 2009 Author Posted January 16, 2009 XP Home Edition Periodic crashes Earlier this week the on board graphics failed it was replaced with a new card. Very shortly after Windows did an automatic update + an Outlook update then things started to go wrong. Tried to uninstall the Outlook update it would not uninstall. Tried to repair Outlook and it could not find file SKU111.cab tried to cancel repair then it called for the original CD, inserted CD and it seemed to clear but now periodically (usually when the system comes out of Standby or hibernation there is an error report saying "system has recovered from a serious error" and takes me back to the MS web site. The error message previously posted seems to have gone. XP Office Pro is installed and all seems to be well and working but boot up once past the profile logon is slow. I have used RegCure to clean the registry. Many thanks for your interest hopefully you can help. Quote
BeeCeeBee Posted January 16, 2009 Posted January 16, 2009 Hi Mike, Registry cleaners often create more problems than they solve. I am not familiar with RegCure as I would not touch it or any with a ten foot pole. If you have your office CD I would suggest that you do a system restore to just before you used RegCure. Use the office CD to repair and then then reboot. If registry adjustments need to be made it would be best posting here first. Quote "Familiarity breeds contempt - and children." Mark Twain
mikefred Posted January 17, 2009 Author Posted January 17, 2009 XP Home Edition periodic crashes Thanks Beeceebee I love using computers but hate maintaining them so this is a “crash course” (apologies for that!) If the machine is Turned Off (via Start, Turn Off) and then rebooted the boot up is quick and with no problems and the machine and all of the various applications seemed to work flawlessly. If the machine is woken from Screen Saver no problem. However if it is allowed to go into Stand By or Hibernation eventually the machine reboots itself to the Windows Logon, after entering the password the start up takes a very long time and always has the “Recovered from a Serious Error” message, if this message is cancelled (ie no error reporting to MS) then the machine works perfectly. I have attached some copies from the event log which may be helpful especially if you can interpret them.ERROR info 1.doc Quote
Guest Wolfeymole Posted January 17, 2009 Posted January 17, 2009 Why are you running an IPSEC query in command prompt Mike? Quote
mikefred Posted January 19, 2009 Author Posted January 19, 2009 XP Home Edition periodic crashes Hi Wolfeymole As you will have realised I am hopelessly out of my depth. When the machine went down I rebooted and looked at the Event Log and followed the trail from there. It eventually took me to MS website and suggested I use Hotfix 86607 reference Article KB837432. However this seems to relate to SP1 whereas my machine is running on SP3 so I am not sure if it should be installed. In answer to your question in amongst my research it was suggested I go to Run then type cmd and at the command prompt type sc + service name the details are as per my previous attachments. Quote
Tootech Posted January 19, 2009 Posted January 19, 2009 Have you uninstalled the drivers for the onboard video? Quote
mikefred Posted January 19, 2009 Author Posted January 19, 2009 XP Home Edition periodic crashes Hi Tootech When the pc went down PC Repairs Ltd traced the problem to the on board graphics and installed a new card I have just spoken with them and they say the old driver was not uninstalled. Quote
Tootech Posted January 20, 2009 Posted January 20, 2009 Well, dare I say it - your PC repairers need sacking!! It would be wise to track the old drivers down and uninstall them. They will be set to start when the PC starts up. It may be that they are interfering with the drivers for your new card/and screen standby. Have a look in the Add/Remove Programs for the old video driver entries. If you are not sure what to remove, let us know what make/model motherboard Mesh fitted to your PC and we should be able to advise you further. Quote
mikefred Posted January 21, 2009 Author Posted January 21, 2009 XP Home Edition periodic crashes Hi Tootech Many thanks for your response. Please see the attachment which shows the Device Manager “Display Adapters” and System Information “Display” I have looked at Add or Remove Programs and can only find “Nvidia Drivers” I have just discovered that by going to Start/Turn Off Computer/Standby the machine immediately goes into Standby. Thereafter can be woken up with no time delay to the logon prompt and is immediately returned to it’s previous state without any error message. Does this mean just the Standby & Hibernation system is malfunctioning if so can this be repaired ? Please let me know how I can get the motherboard etc details Your continued assistance is really appreciated.ERROR info 3 21.1.09.doc Quote
