Non-responsive printers

I'm running Windows XP on an HP Pavilion 7955. I had a non-restorable hard

drive crash last week, possibly due to registerycleanerxp.com which bombarded

my computer with pop-ups constantly. I installed a 160 gig hard drive and

reinstalled Windows XP disks. Also installed a spyware and an antivirus

program. My Epson Stylus Photo R320 printer, and Canon BJC-4550 do not

respond, although their windows show that there is data in the queues. I've

tried restarting the Print Spooler in services.msc to no avail. Any ideas?

Re: Non-responsive printers

http://www.google.co.uk/search?hl=en&q=registrycleaner.com&meta=

....results seem to indicate registrycleaner.com is a malicous site.

"XP DiskS" ...plural ? What diskS are you talking about ? an official XP

cd? PC vendor restore disk/s ?

....PC manufacturer restore procedures are sometimes supplied and described

as a "destructive restore," and sometimes a "non-destructive restore", or

both could be available/sometimes supplied !

A 'Destructive restore', or 'reset' if you prefer, replaces all software,

including the OS, to the state it was in when you bought it. After

performing one of these; almost certainly, anything you did, (on that drive

at least), or added to the machine after you bought it will be GONE !

A 'Non-destructive restore' often replaces the OS and bundled apps. to the

state they were in when you bought the thing, plus directories and files

you've previously added to the system should still be there. (Programs that

you installed after you bought the PC will either be missing or present but,

no longer working, and would need to be reinstalled).

If you performed a some sort of PC manufacturer "restore," and BEFORE

connecting to the internet, had made sufficient effort to harden up your

PC's defenses for internet use, your machine should be free of malware !

Security software, such as anti-virus programs will often interfere with

correct installation and configuration of software such as Printer drivers !

After verifying that the printer software source e.g. Epson CD, including

driver, isn't infected with malware - disconnect from the internet - disable

all security software - and install the printer driver/s.

I have two Epson printers and, if memory serves, they cause "merry hell" if

a firewall blocks some sort of local network access, ...or was it 127.0.0.1

....can't remember now !

regards, Richard

Hello Grampa Gene,

Am I correct in assuming that you re-installed both printers 'from

scratch' after the

new hd install?

Never respond the these type of message! This a method of re-

directing your Internet to a dangerous web site and infest your system

with spyware (if you are lucky) or "ransomware" (more likely this!)

NO, it's a scam. You need to install a firewall.
