Well I recently decided to retire my old Frankenstein Compaq PC and build a new one and I am SO glad I did. I've been having an annoying problem with it though and I figure someone here might be able to shed some light where I haven't been able to. The thing is, my front panel USB ports don't work. No matter what I plug in them, nothing happens. I get no error message, no "new hardware detected" messages popping up and apparently no power at all in the USB devices. I figured it might be the ports themselves but I've used the same case with my old computer and the front panel USB worked perfectly fine. I have double-checked and even tripple-checked and everything is plugged in correctly to the motherboard. The back ports work perfectly fine. All of them. I'm thinking it might be a pin-out problem with the connectors on my motherboard as I have heard of such things before but I'd like some insight on this before I attempt to fix it myself.

Here are my specs:

Motherboard: Asus P5E3 Premium

Processor: Intel Quad Core Q6590

Graphics card: nVidia GeForce 9800GX2

Memory: Kingston 4GBs DDR3, 1600 MHz

Operating System: Windows XP Pro

All of that wrapped up in a nice Antec Nine Hundred case

Am I missing something? Any help or pointers you may provide would be greatly appreciated.

Ok on the front panel on the inside of the case their should be some wires that look like this:-

You then plug them into these on the MOBO:-

Hope this helps :)

Thanks, but I've checked yet again and everything is connected properly to the motherboard. I've also tried connecting those wires to a different USB connector on the motherboard to no avail. They're still as dead as they were before. I thought maybe it's the wires going from the front panel that are dead but since they worked with my old motherboard and not the new one, it would be rather unlikely.

How long ago did you buy the mobo?

It may be a case of returning it due to a fault and getting a replacement sent

Have you tried that mobo in a different case to see if the USB sockets work with another front panel?

I bought it a few months ago, and it is still under warranty, thankfully. It's strange though that both connectors on the board seem to be dead. Hmmm...

I have not tried it with another case yet simply because I do not have access to one. I'll look for one though and let you guys know how that test went once I've been able to try it.

Okay but try to get one during the warrenty, just incase it IS the mobo.

It is a bit strange, especially as ASUS are a very strong company in this area.
