pcman800 Posted January 20, 2009 Posted January 20, 2009 hello i have a problem with my pc. I installed a new Windows XP Pro. (clean install absolutely). for the first its ok, its booting up in the same day after i fix it but after the day i fix (probably the next day) it ddnt boot up and there is an error stating that the hal.dll is missing or corrupt etc....since it takes time to me find that dll. i proceed to another step w/c is also a clean step and this time i use Windows Vista. Same also, after the day i fix, the following day boot failed again. What seems to be the problem? isn't the HDD or the system. all of my O.s. is genuine Windows XP Pro Windwos Vista Home Will you please help me to be able to solve this problem of mine? thanks Quote

BeeCeeBee Posted January 20, 2009 Posted January 20, 2009 Hello pcman and Welcome to Extreme Tech Support - Free PC Help! There are a number of reasons that may be behind this boot failure. See Error message: "Windows could not start because of a computer disk hardware configuration problem" Frankly your post is confusing and I am not sure exactly where you stand. Are you saying that you have both vista and xp installed? What is the original OS for this machine? Have you tried to boot using f8 and choosing "Last good configuration?" While it may be a hard drive problem it is almost impossible to say. Please help us out with more information. Quote "Familiarity breeds contempt - and children." Mark Twain

Goku Posted January 20, 2009 Posted January 20, 2009 Hello PCMan. This appears to be a problem with your Boot.ini file and seeing that you are dual-booting the problem, I am not surprised. Please use the instructions from the below article to try and resolve the problem. "Invalid Boot.ini" or "Windows could not start" error messages when you start your computer Hope that helps. Let us know the results though. :) -- Goku Quote

DirtyPolo Posted January 20, 2009 Posted January 20, 2009 (edited) Okay pcman, Looking at your previous post, From what I read it seems this way, correct me if I am wrong: You did a clean installation of Windows XP onto a fresh HDD. After a day of it working, you got the stated error. You reformatted the HDD Then installed a fresh copy of Windows Vista onto that same HDD. [so Vista is the ONLY OS on the HDD] To get the same error. Looking at this evidence, it is beginning to appear that the problem lies within the HDD itself. Two options I will advise you do: - Purchase a Caddy, for your current HDD, which allows it to be connected to another PC via USB. Use this to run a chkdsk on your HDD through another PC. If you are willing to do this please let us know so we can advise you how to if you wish. - The other is to purchase a new HDD, do another fresh install of the Operating System and see if that works.
