TS CALs and dual core processors

We recently ordered some new computers with dual core processors. I noticed

on our TS Licensing server that these computers are using 2 CALs each. Is

this by design because of the dual processors or should they only be using

one CAL?

What is the licensing mode of the TS?

Which type of licenses have you purchased and installed on the LS?

 

Each client should only use a single TS CAL.

How exactly are these TS CALs listed in the TS Licensing Manager?

Description - Type - Issued - etc?

You can produce a report with the lsreport tool from the Resource

Kit.

Domain controller is SBS 2k3

TS servers are 2k3 Standard, licensing per device.

Clients are XP Pro

 

We have 25 Terminal Server Per Device CAL Tokens

 

The duplicate instances are issued at different dates but have almost the

same expiration date.

OK, so both licenses are permanent ones, correct? Not one permanent

license and one temporary license?

 

Check what happened to these clients on the day the *second*

license was issued. One reason for this behaviour could be that the

locally stored license was deleted from the registry. This can

happen either deliberately, to solve a licensing problem, or as a

side effect of a fresh installation of the OS.

 

Note that expiration dates are random, 52-89 days after issueing,

so that doesn't tell anything about the cause of the duplicate

licenses.

Thank you! I think I know the cause. Each of these new PC's were re-imaged

before being put into production. Prior to the re-image, we logged onto the

TS during the testing phase.

 

With the impending move to dual cores, I'm glad to see I won't have to

double the amount of CALs.

Great, mystery solved! Thanks for the feedback, David!

And those 2 extra licenses will eventually expire and be returned

to the pool, so there's nothing you have to (or can) do to get them

back earlier.
