I posted this yesterday but didn't get much of a response, so I thought I'd

try again:

We have a Win 2003 Ent SP2 server that just shuts down unexpectedly. The

admins never tell me what has happened with this box. I looked in Event

Viewer and there's no clues there. Furthermore, Perf Mon logs do not show

anything unusual, i.e. high activity, etc.

Where else can I look to find out what is going on with this server? I

guess what I'm asking is what logs (besides event viewer) can I look at to

see why this keeps going belly up and how do I find them?

welcome to my world, same thing. It seems to quite a few folks over the last

two days having the same issue.

Well, I guess there's some comfort in knowing that others are getting the

same issue. :)

But have you found any clues in any logs or anything??

So far no. I suspect possibly elevated temperatures, however having to

identical DELL 4600's you would think both would do it. Perhaps a bad

security update? It has happened in the past.

If I find anything I'll be sure to post. I have it set to do a dump if it

happens again.

Can you please tell me how to set the server so it will do a dump? I want to

Re: Surprise Shotdown

Under system properties in control panel, or right click on "My computer"

then click the advanced tab, look at the bottom and click "settings" under

"Startup and Recovery", then select "small memory dump" under "write

debugging information". You have to restart for it to take affect.

then look at this article as a guideline for analyzing a dump file.

http://blogs.technet.com/petergal/archive/2006/03/23/422993.aspx

It gives you a good look at how to look at the dump and determine the cause

of the problem.

Several other users with the same problems have said that no dump is created

(happens to fast to grab the dump).

Re: Surprise Shotdown

This is a long shot but make sure the the HDD firmware is up to date. A

little while back there was a major firmware patch that came out for a major

HDD vendor (don't remember who though). If I remember correctly, it was for

SCSI drives. The affected drives would just suddenly and randomly stop

responding, even if working properly for months. If your OS HDDs are

affected, this may be why you do not see any logs (although most OS setups

are at least RAID 1 so the chances of more that one failing at the same time

are slim). Another though while on the RAID idea is that possibly the OS

RAID controller is acting up. Like I stated at the beginning, this would be

a long shot...

Best of luck.

Re: Surprise Shotdown

Funny you should mention that. We did have a drive go crazy and the system

broke the mirror. We checked it and put it back online, it rebuilt fine.

Will definitely check the SCSI drives and the RAID controller for firmware

updates. We haven't updated firmware in a looooong time. We live by the if

it ain't broke don't try fixing it motto.

This is very interesting. We've got a Netapp with Scsi, but I believe

they're backup only. But I do know they've had problems with drives

disappearing! I'll check on that as well...

Re: Surprise Shotdown

CLM,

Are you still having the random shutdowns?

We haven't had any more since the last on around 10 pm Friday night, at 2 am

Saturday we updated the RAID firmware, the ESM backplane firmware (DELL PE

4600) and everything seems to be okay again.
