Unable to change Terminal Services Home Folder Location

I'm trying to change the Local Path (Default is C:\Documents and Settings) to

D:\Documents and Settings. Originally when the Terminal Server was built the

Local path was left as the default as a result the system drive is running

out of space since we have several users with large profiles. Would any one

be able to tell me what i might be doing wrong... When i change the local

path on the Terminal Services Profile to D:\Documents and Settings\%username%

or make the same change under the TS User Home Directory Properties in the

Group Policy it seems to have no effect. Am i going about this the wrong way

or is it simply not possible?

Thank you

Check this:

User profiles are filling up my C: drive. Can I move them to my D:

drive?

Re: Unable to change Terminal Services Home Folder Location

Vera,

Thank you for your quick response. Unfortunately reinstalling the OS on

the Terminal Server is out of the question in my situation. It seems like TS

is designed to allow you to change "My Documents and Settings", but it just

isn't working for me.

Re: Unable to change Terminal Services Home Folder Location

Not being able to change the location of the user profiles (the C:

\Documents and Settings folder) has nothing to do with Terminal

Services. It is not supported on any system, as KB 236621

describes.

You might confuse moving the users profile with the GPO setting to

redirect the "My Documents" folder, which is just a sub-folder of

the user profile. Note that none of the above is the TS Home

Folder, as you use in the title of this thread.

Few people are prepared to do a fresh install of their Terminal

Server, that's why I propose roaming profiles and deleting the

locally cached copy.

Re: Unable to change Terminal Services Home Folder Location

Vera,

I guess i am pretty confused about what the differences between the

following AD Property tabs are:

1. Profile > User Profile > Profile Path

2. Terminal Services Profile > Terminal Services User Profile > Profile Path

3. Terminal Services Profile > Terminal Services Home Folder > Local Path

Here is what my understanding of the items listed below work:

1. This is where you setup a roaming profile

2. Change the default location (C:\Documents and Settings\%Username%) of a

users profile on the Terminal server

3. Redirect a users "My Documents" folder only and not the entire users

profile

Would you be able to clarify where i'm going wrong with this?

Thank you!

Re: Unable to change Terminal Services Home Folder Location

No, that's not what these settings mean.

On every Windows system that you log on to, you need a profile.

Since a Terminal Server profile has many settings which are

different from a workstation profile, you cannot use the same

profile on your workstation and a Terminal Server. So each user who

connect to a TS needs two separate profiles.

1. Profile > User Profile > Profile Path

This settings defines the normal user profile, i.e. the profile

which is used when the user logs on to a workstation. It can be

local or roaming, depending on the path you configure here. I'll

skip mandatory profiles for now.

2. Terminal Services Profile > Terminal Services User Profile >

Profile Path

This is the TS-specific profile path. Is used when the user logs

ojn to a terminal Server. Can be local or roaming (or mandatory),

depending on the path.

3. Terminal Services Profile > Terminal Services >

Home Folder > Local Path

This is the location of the TS Home folder, which is the folder in

which Windows creates the "windows" subdirectory when a user

creates a TS specific profile for the first time. The windows

subdirectory contains user-specfic settings for applications

installed on a Terminal Server. If you don't specify a TS Home

folder, then the windows subdirectory is created in the TS profile

directory.

Redirecting the "My Documents" folder cannot be done in the user

account properties in AD, it can only be done in a Group Policy.

Setting can be found here:

User Configuration - Windows Settings - Folder Redirection

My Documents
