The silly mouse has been acting up the past couple days - worked fine one night and poof!, the next morning it was misbehaving (nothing had been downloaded).

If trying to highlight something, it often either instantly highlights many lines or refuses to highlight where I click and hold down ... plus, if I inadvertently touch the mouse on an icon sitting on desktop, the program instantly opens ... if I try to drag an icon, it instantly opens ... and it's just general unstable.

The mouse is about 2 years old and says "VAIO" on it and is the kind that has a little red glowing area under it.

I went to Control Panel>Appearances & Themes>Folder Options and it was ticked for 'Double-click' to open, etc ... then, just to double-check, unticked it a... then clicked 'Restore Default' and 'Okay'.

Still not working properly and in fact seems to be getting worse.

Found the section that tells me about the mouse I have:

"HID-compliant Mouse"

"Manufacturer: Microsoft"

The section says it's working properly and there is no newer drivers for:

"C:\Windows\System32\Drivers\mouclass.sys"

"C:\Windows\System32\Drivers\mouhid.sys"

I'd really appreciate help, if possible, with this pesky mouse - have absolutely no idea what to do next, unfortunately.

It just sounds like the parts under the mouse buttons have just got old and clogged up - just get a new mouse and see how that is they are only around £2-£5 at the most :)

Have a look at the innner workings of an old ball mouse here Mara.

HowStuffWorks "How Computer Mice Work"

Apart from the up/down and left/right wheels the mechanics are much the same, now have a look at pic number 5 and notice the two silver squares with black circles on below the Logitech chip, they are the left and right click buttons which to my mind have become worn.

It's just not worth getting trying to get it fixed, in fact if you did take it into a repair shop you'd probably hear them laughing 6 months later.

I imagine that mouse has had some hammer over the two years with the amount of mouse clicks you will have performed on your picture restoration work alone.

As Dave said dump it and get a new one love.

I agree with the solution of replacing it, an optical mouse, as you have described that you have, is not very expensive to replace :P [About £2.99 on ebuyer.com]

Just a quick question, is it wired, or does it take batteries?

I'm guessing it's wired but just making sure :P

Thank you so, so much to all of you once again - what lovely gentleman you are!

I just took a look at the photos on the link site - gosh, I never imagined anything like that inside the plastic casing!

And undoutedly I've just worn this poor thing out - either that or wee kitty hairs may have floated into it - so really appreciate knowing taking it to a repair shop would simply result in the service people hooting with laughter! :)

Since I've actually never purchased a mouse (one came with the computer), zipped over to our local store's online site to check things out before we venture out to buy one.

The one I have has a cord but wow, it's not just a decision about cord or cordless, it appears there is a decision re optical versus laser, etc. None of our prices are as low here in Canada (drat!) ... but I wonder if a cheap mouse for about $20 works just as well as a more expensive one. And, for that matter, if cordless is better or laser is better or or or? Good grief! Such a little thing and so many decisions - huge gentle laugh!

Forget about a laser mouse Mara as your not into high end gaming.

Cordless optical mice are ok but consider extra expense on buying rechargeable batteries and a charger.

Depending on usage they can consume battery life fast and you also have to consider the implications should the cat decide to sit on the optical sensor usb stick.

The choice is yours love.

Optical and laser are basically the same,

But as wolfey says, you don't need to spend a lot on a mouse as only the gaming mice are expensive.

As for wired or wireless, stick with wired, you dont want to mess around with fitting batteries and things.

The only reason why I asked, was because in my wireless mouse, I sometimes get the same things happening to me that you had, when my batteries are getting low :P

Err its not exactly brain surgery fitting 2 batteries in a mouse Matt, no pun intended lol. :D:D

I know bob, but I meant it in the way of such that unless you spend a lot of money on a wireless mouse, it will eat through batteries and changing them every week isnt really fun :)

It's great to know a laser one isn't necessarily better unless one does gaming - so after reading all the replies, I've decided to just get an 'old-fashioned' optical one with a cord (how I'd hate to forget and not have extra batteries on hand and a low battery with the mouse do nutty things again - ugh!).

Now if I can only find a lovely green one with a cord. :)

Thanks so much again, everyone - honestly appreciate it ever so much!

See Mara this is where you go wrong. The mouse I suggested is not a typing mouse he is only trained to run around the screen and click on things.

If you want a typing mouse you have to send it to secretarial school which is a fairly expensive.:D

Seriously though, I use a wireless mouse and as a result received a Christmas gift from the chairman of Duracell. BUT I have a laptop and can always rely on the touchpad as much as i detest it. If you are going to use a wireless on a PC best have a spare wired one around.

Oh, but the little green mouse looks so intelligent, I'm sure he could learn to type in no time. Hmmm, maybe not - his hand span may not be able to cope with this too large keyboard. Oh well, he can perch on top of my monitor when he's not running around the screen clicking on things ... for surely he's my kind of pet - no dirt box involved!! :)

I have the worse luck with rechargeable batteries and as for regular batteries, 'there ought to be a law!' - huge gentle laugh! For I honestly have a drawer full of assorted sizes of batteries. Buy a toy, need batteries - toy breaks, still have a slew of those batteries that fit no other toy ... we've got all shapes and sizes and yet somehow when we need a new battery for something, not a single one of them is right. I even gave up and bought flashlights that one has to manually wind up - just so I could feel that for once I won the 'battery war' -huge grin!

Well Mara the way he is looking up at you, he is yours to keep.

Might make a nice avatar if you want to be seen that way.

In any event consider him a gift no need for ebay.

Printed the wee fellow out on photo paper and stuck him to the edge of the computer monitor - surely he'll keep the 'bugs' away - huge happy smile!

Thanks again, Barry!

I'm sure you will give the little guy a wonderful home and from that vantage point may he may even learn to to type on his own.:)
