Server will not Shutdown but only Restart

Recommended Posts

I'm building a new Windows 2003 Server Enterprise Edition (32 Bit) on a Dell

PowerEdge 2900. Right after I installed the OS, I can Shut the Server down

without any problems. But, after I installed Service Pack 1 and Service Pack

2 the Shutdown option will not Shut down but only Restart. Hardware and

Software are brand new ones.

I wipped every thing three times and started over again, having the same

symptom. I didn't install any application yet. I only have the OS.

The Event Viewer is clean, not even a yellow entry.

Can somebody help me to find a solution? I couldn't find any article

regarding this problem.

Thank you,

Luis

RE: Server will not Shutdown but only Restart

Hi,

I have seen issues where you shutdown and the system restarts, not specific

to a Server however. I found that it was a setting in the BIOS wake on USB -

I am not saying this is your issue because you say it only happens when you

install SP1 but its worth a look.

I had similar problem with a new Dell 2950. Don't remember how to fix it

exactly. But I think either DRAC or NIC teaming. For new DRAC it has a new

feature called virtual media. If you don't disable it you will see two

CD-ROM drives. You have to go to BIOS setting to disable it. I think that

is how the reboot got fixed, surprised to me.

Does the UserID that you're using to Login with, and then Shutdown the

Server under (Administrator, Backup, etc.) have the assigned rights to

'Shutdown the Server'?

Just an outta the blue thought....

RE: Server will not Shutdown but only Restart

Hi All!

I think I found the culprit one. I disabled in the BIOS both “Embedded

Broadcom NetXtreme II5708 Gigabit Ethernet NICs” that are built-in the

motherboard. I manually added a new 32-bit PCI 3Com 10/100/1000 Mbps. The

Reboot problem has been fixed.

Thank you very much to all of you for your input.

Hi Johan!

You reminded me that I had a similar problem a few years ago with the

built-in Ethernet NICs. It was part of the problem

RE: Server will not Shutdown but only Restart

Hi Oceana!

Yes. I logged in as Administrator in the local machine. The problem was in

the built-in Ethernet NICs. Once, I disabled them in the BIOS the Reboot

issue was fixed.

Thank you,

RE: Server will not Shutdown but only Restart

Just a little comment that SP2 includes SP1 updates. You could of saved

yourself a bit of time there.
