What do you do, and what do you think you SHOULD do?

I decided to ask this question after a good old "debate" between friends as we tried to work out what is best.

I personally shut down but I believe it's good to put it to sleep as it uses only a tiny amount of power, and doesn't need the long startup time in the morning :)

But what's your view?

Also if you're using XP, you're allowed to choose Hibernate instead of sleep, forgot as Vista doesn't have that option! :D

I'm for hibernation.

Quicker startup than normal, all the apps are still open and web pages are where you left them.

Only thing I try and do is restart a couple of times a week to make sure updates get installed.

Perhaps not part of the debate, so if I'm not allowed to hibernate, I'd shutdown.

Hibernate is fine :P

Just Vista cant Hibernate so I forgot about XP :) but yeah, substitute Hibernate for Sleep if you're an XP user and prefer that :D

I voted for sleep but I am on a lappy where I can close the cover and go into hibernate.

Sleep is not an option as such and when I was using a PC would always either leave it running or shut down.

I was looking for the collapse option then realised you was talking about turning off a PC :)

I've got to admit though that since I have been using Vista I tend to turn my pc off more as it's now only two clicks (START/Power Button) compared to the XP (START/Shut Down Computer/Shut Down)

So if Microsoft put a power button next to the start button in Windows 7 then I will probably turn it off all the time

Yes guess you can call me Idle

One of the first things I changed when I got vista, and funnily enough took me a while to work out how, was to change the button on the start menu to shut down.

Mostly I'll shut down at night but during the day when I'm out for a few hours at a time I hibernate it.

Shut down for me - no other reason than if I was on standby all night and had to work the next day i'd not be too happy ;)

I always shut down. I changed vista start button to shut down also. Purely because it saves on my energy costs.

It doesn't take much effort to be nice :)

I don't like Hibernate, as it seems to slow down my pc considerably after starting. Also, the differences in start up time is minimal.

Shutting down is good to install updates and save power, but usually I am using my laptop which is at least five years old so it takes a long time to start up :( usually I just put it on sleep. If I'm going to be away for a while I set it to hibernate. Though my computer is quite old and has developed quite a few bugs (due to a virus which changed registry files *cry*), it is still pretty fast to start up so it will get shut down. :D

i alway, always shut down unless i am literally only leaving it for about half an hour, i which case i sleep it. hibernating and sleeping use a lot of energy (somthing like 90% of running energy) and fill up the hdd with desktop save files, which clogs up your computer
