Guest Several Login attempt Posted November 2, 2007 Posted November 2, 2007 Hi We have recently purchased a new Dell 2900 Power Edge 3.0 Xeon single processor, 3GB RAM, RAID 5 integerated 160GB HDD and windows server 2003 Standard sp2 with all security patches installed and promoted as Primary DC. It includes ADS, DNS, DHCP & Sql server 2005 with required application installed. Trend Micro V 7.3 with all latest virus definitions are updated & it was working fine. No remote connectivity available. 25 Client machines are win XP SP2 with all secured patches. We had one issue: the server is shutdown suddenly only in the morning hour on any day randomly. we checked the following. 1)Software & hardware any issue. we contacted dell support for hardware issue. Dell cleared no issues. 2) we removed unnecessary services from the server. 3) we scanned the server clearly. (No internet activity in production side based on on our policy) 4) software side is also cleared. 5) Network monitoring also taken place, no issue. 6) Power fluctuation - no issue. 7) System event has been monitored - no reason found, everything working fine. What else to be taken to solve this problem? anybody pls help us to come out from these issue. Advance Thanks Rajaguru.A
Guest Anteaus Posted November 2, 2007 Posted November 2, 2007 RE: Server shutdown If it's at a fixed time, check for scheduled events that might be the cause. The server logs might also contain clues as to the cause. If nothing else can be identified, I tend to suspect RAM when servers do weird things. A substitution test is generally the best way of checking- or if possible remove half the memory, test, then replace and remove the other half, and test again. Guest Several Login attempt Posted November 3, 2007 Posted November 3, 2007 RE: Server shutdown Hi thanks 4 ur reply. it is not shutdown fixed time. for ex. one day morning 8.30 & another day it will become 10.00 AM. server logs are taken & we contacted Dell for support. they assured not any hardware issues. We have tested the RAM replacement too. Rajaguru > If it's at a fixed time, check for scheduled events that might be the cause. >The server logs might also contain clues as to the cause.
Guest Allen Harkleroad Posted November 3, 2007 Posted November 3, 2007 Re: Server shutdown We are having a similar issue on a Dell Power Edge 4600, it is very random. We did update the backplane and RAID firmware as a precaution. I am really scratching my head over this (more like going crazy). I suspect it may have been something in a Security update, since we have NEVER had problems with either of the 4600's since we have had then (2-3 years), only one is randomly rebooting, it wouldn't be so bad if it would retort rather than completely shutting down. No crash dumps, nothing to indicate the problem. Guest Gis Bun Posted November 5, 2007 Posted November 5, 2007 RE: Server shutdown Sounds a bit strange that the server shuts down only in the morning. In any case, since it was bought from Dell [and assuming you bought the server license from them], Dell saying that it's not hardware problem is a bit lame. You should push to have them help you solve it. An alternative is reinstalling Server 2003 with no service pack or updates (other than what it comes with) and see if it still reboots. If not, install SP2 and see if it reboots. If not add a couple of updates per day and see if it reboots. With SP2 there aren't many updates to go through. :-) "Several Login attempt" wrote: > Hi > thanks 4 ur reply. it is not shutdown fixed time. for ex. one day morning > 8.30 & another day it will become 10.00 AM. server logs are taken & we > contacted Dell for support. they assured not any hardware issues. > We have tested the RAM replacement too. > > Rajaguru > > > If it's at a fixed time, check for scheduled events that might be the cause. > >The server logs might also contain clues as to the cause. > > >
