Windows Storage Server 2003 R2 Capabilities

We have recently purchased WSS2003 R2 boxes. I have noticed that in the

add/remove options you can install most all the standard Windows Server 2003

Functions such as DNS, DHCP, IIS, etc...

Are these server functions actually supported under Windows Storage Server?

It also looks like dcpromo can run from these boxes?

Re: Windows Storage Server 2003 R2 Capabilities

Hello Stephen,

It is optimized for Storage functionality. You can not promote it to domain

controller:

Question No11

Why will you "misuse" a product created for Storage solutions for normal

services, which do not need this optimization?

Best regards

Re: Windows Storage Server 2003 R2 Capabilities

Thank you for the quick reply.

Essentially I run SBS in my main office and have VPN tunnels to my branch

offices. All my branch offices connect to our domain perfectly fine and I

have User Folder REdirection on these storage boxes along with printer

server.

I just happened to stumble across the ability in the add/remove components

that show the ability to install other services.

It would be nice to install DNS on these boxes as well, just to speed up DNS

queries in my remote branches.

I have installed the services for DNS just to test, but none of the clients

are able to resolve through the Storage Server box.

I am just wondering if Microsoft purposely has disabled the functions even

though they allow them to be installed?

Thanks

Hello Stephen,

If you can install DNS in your case, then it will work. The question is how

did you configure DNS and the clients on the remote site? Please describe

what you have done.
