rabbyp Posted January 26, 2009 Posted January 26, 2009 Hi, I have an enquiry for anybody with Modem router knowledge. Yesterday I bought a Belkin G+ Mimo ADSL MODEM Router with the hopes of the range being able to suit the lay out of my apartment. The signal was no better than my old Modem router which was a Thomson 716 v5WL. The modem router has to be in the living room as the xbox needs to be connected via ethernet and I do not want wires all over my floors. So moving it is not an option. My problem is I am getting weak signal in my bedroom with my desktop PC and a second xbox 360 which uses a wireless usb adapter. It would be probably 15-20 meters away through a couple of walls My PC is operating on Windows media edition and I currently have a Belkin N wirless card (which is massive) My question is, what modem router would be my best bet to get a good constant signal and half decent mps? I imagine an N series would be best but I dont want to spend more money to be dissapointed. I have been told to remain using my Thomson 716v5WL Modem Router with a G wireless extender in the hall way. Would this be better than a N or N1?? I cant see this being the case if a G+ Mimo couldnt give my the range Thanks in advance for any help Rab Quote
Tootech Posted January 26, 2009 Posted January 26, 2009 Its always difficult to say what wireless gear will work and to what range. Walls, wall thickness, local interference and other electrical equipment all can cause signal degridation. Make sure you are using matched adpaters with the router - using a 54g adapter with an N standard router will be no better than using the adapter with a G standard router. Another solution, and one which I have used successfully is use a couple of Homeplugs and a wireless access point close by to your wireless equipment. One Homeplug powered next to your router, connected with an ethernet cable. the other in the room or close by to where you need wireless, and the wireless access point connected to it, thus extending your range. It''s not cheap, but it is very effective. Ebuyer do some ok Homeplugs - Happy to recommend these... Extra Value 85Mbps Powerline Homplug Adapter - Twin Pack **PRICE ENDS FRIDAY** - Ebuyer Quote
Dalo Harkin Posted January 28, 2009 Posted January 28, 2009 The XBOX wireless adapter is very good though - mine travels through 2 ceilings and is still full signal Wireless draft N is the best in terms of range, it depends on how much you want to spend A wireless adapter for the xbox is like £50 you should then be able to compromise in terms of moving the router to a more central location Quote Intel Q6600 @ 4Ghz (Watercooled)Asus P5K premium black pearl4GB OCZ Reaper 8500260GTX Join Free PC Help - Register here Donations are welcome - here PC Build We are all members helping other members. Please return here where you may be able to help someone else. After all, no one knows everything and you may have the answer that someone needs.
rabbyp Posted January 29, 2009 Author Posted January 29, 2009 Hi, Ended up taking back the G+ MIMO and got a Belkin N Modem Router. Range is far superior and looks alot neater too. Thanks for the responses Quote
