Hi, title say it all really.

I'm just trying to cover all bases for when I get my netbook and making sure I order everything I need.

I'm pretty sure there is usb cables that let you share the internet. See the problem is in my uni flat the internet port is locked to my laptop. So I'm unable to provide the netbook with an internet connection when there. Not a big problem as I will have wireless connections when around uni and at home but if I could get an internet connection to it that would be good.

Obviously I'll have to contact the relevant person here to make sure that sharing like that is acceptable or even possible.

Oh obviously my laptop only has the one ethernet port or I wouldn't be asking this.

Thanks

Shrimps,

I am not sure what you mean here mate?

Do you have a router at your uni flat and you want to use a USB stick to access it??

given your pc knowledge I am guessing you are trying to do something else and I just wanted to clarify before I posted

No sorry, in room there's an Ethernet port which my laptops connected to, but its locked to my laptop.

I was looking for a way to share an internet connection between two computers like you can via an ethernet cable and thought it was possible using a special USB cable, although I'm not sure.

AS I said I have no idea if it will work here even if it is possible, but will have to contact the university to make sure its OK for me to do.

Ask the university if they allow it first - we can then find out how :D

Thanks, just thought it was better to find out if it was possible first.

Instead of looking like an idiot and asking if I was allowed to do something that wasn't possible, if you see what I mean.

Well assuming you have permission there are a few options.

USB: as far as I am aware you cant just use a bog standard USB cable without some third part software between the 2 PC's however you can get a specific USB cable (Bridged or USB network cable) that will allow you to connect 2 PC's and with the correct TCP/IP config you could access the internet on both. (We can tackle the config if you decide to do that)

Wireless: put a wireless adaptor in each PC, on the PC that IS authorised you will need to set the LAN card IP as the default gateway on the wireless card that is also plugged in and then on the 'not yet authorised' PC you will have to set an address in the same subnet as the first wireless card with the first wirless card's IP as the default gateway.

There is a little more to it than that but if you get authorisation and decide which option you want to take I will write you out a config sheet.
