I found a free software called Universal Extractor, which is for making normal programs into portable programs...i think. It seems like it has been around for a while so i was wondering if anyone has ever used this program? How does a protable program work? I'm new to the concept of a portable program, but from what i understand it means the program is simply the .exe file and you have it stored on whatever device you want and you can run it off that device, it doesn't install onto the computer and it doesn't make any entries, when you unplug the device it was like the software was never run on that computer before. Is this correct?

I can't see where you get that notion King mate.

It looks to me it does what it says on the tin and that's to simply extract files from zip folders in whatever flavour.

Programs like Winzip, Winrar and 7 Zip allow you to create zip files, UE allows you to unzip them ONLY.

Hadn't come across Universal Extractor before, so I've had a play with it!

It doesn't do what you describe you want, if that makes sense.

There are other apps that may be of more use to you.

Have a look at these two links, I use U3 and find it very useful, Ceedo I have only tinkered with.

Bring the power of portable software to your USB flash drive - make it a U3 smart drive!

I have used the application briefly and it can extract files from *.exe and *.msi packages. I don't know if it has the ability to compile the files back or not but I can see how you could find the application useful.

Nice links Scott. I will check them when I can spare a few moments. :)
