Excellent wireless signal but will not connect

Hi,

 

I bought a Belkin N Modem router, got it all set up in my living room using a laptop and an ethernet cable and everything was working fine.

 

I was not getting signal with my last modem router in my bedroom so this is why I have upgraded to a N model.

 

When this was set up I turned on my PC in my bedroom and I was getting 5 bars of signal showing and it connected perfectly using a Belkin N1 series wireless usb adapter

 

I also have an Xbox 360 in my bedroom using a wireless usb adapter which also connected at 4 bars.

 

Then for what ever reason, my flat mate decided to move the router to another point in the apartment & then move it back again.

 

Since then on both my pc and my Xbox 360 show the signal strength being between 4-5 bars each but it will not connect.

 

I have tried restoring my computer, re-installing my wireless card, restoring modem router back to factory settings, reset my xbox to factory settings but nothing is working.

 

I have tried using the Belkin wireless software on my PC but it also shows full signal but will not connect to the modem router!!

 

At the same time the laptop can connect to it via wireless no problem, even in my room.

There is no security on the Modem router yet so this is not the issue

 

Has anybody any experience on this as I am baffled :confused:

I am thinking its more of an issue with the modem router as I have 2 different wireless appliances that will not connect

 

Just to recap on my hardware/software

 

Windows XP Professional

Belkin N Modem Router Belkin : N Modem Router

Belkin N1 Wireless USB adapter Belkin : N1 Wireless USB Adapter

It looks like you may not have entered the wep or wpa code into your laptop or that it was lost when you moved and reset the router.

And what exactly do I have to do to resolve this?

 

Im not exactly great when it comes to networking so if you could give me steps on how to fix this I would very much appreciate it.

Do you have software supplied by your ISP? If you do then reinstall it and it will probably lead you to where you have to enter the key.

 

You may also try disconnecting from the network and then click on the little monitor icon and then view wireless networks.

 

Identify yours and where it asks enter the key. (That assumes that the network is security enabled by the isp.)

There's a few things I can think of to do.

 

Firstly, are you setting up the router using the Belkin login 192.168.2.1?

 

User is Admin, and no password, unless you have set one up.

 

Once you know your way around it's better than using the CD or the setup wizard.

 

Go to your wireless settings and make sure all encryption is removed for the moment. Also, I can't remember with this router, but I think the channel number is set to Auto. You can change it to manual and select a channel - do that, say select channel 1.

 

On your computer, have a look in your wireless settings, View Wireless Networks, then Change Advanced Settings. Go to the middle tab, Wireless Networks and down to Preferred Networks. Remove any references to your Belkin wireless network.

 

Can you connect now?

I have tried all that.

 

I have reset the modem router to factory settings using the laptop, signed into the device and checked security settings and there is nothing set.

 

I then try to connect using my PC and it shows the router with full signal bars, states that is a unsecured network but still will not connect.

 

Same with the xbox, shows that it is an unsecured network but still does not connect.

 

Any other ideas as to what could be causing this??

My address for the belkin is 192.168.2.1 but I can only access this with the laptop.

 

At the moment the channel is set to 6, which was working perfectly until the router was moved & moved back again.

 

But this channel works fine with the laptop???

Ok, what is your IP address on your main PC ?

 

Connect your main PC to the router using the ethernet cable.

 

I've a feeling that it may have been set manually.

 

On your main PC, make sure your firewall is not blocking your connection to the router, and set your IP and DNS as automatic, remove any Default Gateways and leave it sort itself out.

 

Then repair the LAN connection, that will clear out any junk in the cache.

 

Can you now connect to the router 192.168.2.1 from your PC using your ethernet cable?

 

If not, can you do and IPCONFIG /ALL from the Command prompt and post the results.

Hi again,

 

My PC is at home and I am in work but I was able to run a quick check on my lunch break.

 

My PC was originally set up for Vista and I have downgraded to XP and hadnt realised till now that my ethernet drivers are not installed.

 

I did do a little test,

 

I checked that on TCP/IP protocol settings were set to automatic as well as automatic for the DNS

 

I then used to laptop to set up a WEP key on the router just to see if my pc was seeing the right thing

 

Sure enough, refreshed my PC wireless search and it comes up with my router stating that it is security enabled and asks me for a WEB key, Did the same with my xbox 360 and it asks me for a WEB key but neither will connect!!

 

Is this looking like an issue with the router and not my pc or xbox????

 

I have restored the router back to factory settings and tried again but that hasnt worked.

 

Any other suggestions??

When and how was this "downgrade"accomplished? There are driver issues involved when you go from vista to XP.

 

Where did the XP discs come from?

Over a year ago I did this,

 

Keep in mind that I was connected to this network, surfing the net running at 270mbps, and able to access XBOX live last night.

 

My flat mate unplugged the router when i was connected to it, moved it to another part of the apartment, turned it on and then decided to move it back.

 

Since then I have not been able to connect.

 

Has something happened when he turned it off???? even though he can still connnect!!

I assume that you have not had the time to try the suggestions listed above by Tootech so it makes little sense to jump to conclusions until you do. But if you can no longer connect with both the PC and the Xbox it would seem that the issue is either with the router or a common settings error on both machines.

I did run the test and it came up with no IP address or Subnet mask.

 

Gave me no information other than it stated the wireless usb adapter i was using. It gave its full name and model

This is getting to be a mess.

 

Right, stop doing factory resets on your router - we don't know where we are with the settings each time you do that.

 

Remove your wireless security from your router for the moment. So NO WEP and NO WPA for now.

 

The theory is that with no wireless security any device should connect.

 

Clean out the old wireless connection info from the Advanced Wireless page as I described earlier on both your lappy and your PC.

 

If your laptop can connect with no wireless security - great, there is nothing wrong with your router.

 

Then, moving on from there, if your PC still cannot connect using a wireless adapter, there is something wrong with your PC setup.

 

Do you see that?

 

Let us know how you get on.

Problem solved :D

 

Got my mate to come down to take a look at it and asked if I had performed a hard reset on the modem router.

 

I thought I had but all I'd been doing was restoring it back to factory defaults.

 

Tried this and automatically both pc and xbox are running splendidly at 5 bars signal and 150 MBPS :p

 

I would suggest anybody else with the same problem try this method first

I guess your mate pressed the reset button on the back.

Yes, held the reset button on the back for about 10-20 seconds.

 

As soon as it re-booted itself the wireless light started to flash showing that I was connected.

 

I still have no clue as to what happened and it baffled my mate who has set up more wireless networks than Ive had hot dinners.

 

But its working so I wont dwell on it.

Factory resets on a Router normally involve leaving it unplugged for 20-30 mins too.

 

Just to let you know mbps is mega bytes per second - 50 mbps is the max you can get at the moment - with CABLE - thats what I have :D

 

If you are getting 270 or 150 - im moving to your house :D

Im obviously refering to the connection between my pc and my router, NOT the speed provided by my ISP....hence the topic of discussion
