Guest Robert Vilhelmsen Posted November 5, 2007 Posted November 5, 2007 Hi, I am considering buying a cheap Dell poweredge 840 storage server 2003 R2 workgroup edt. for my remote office plus a Thecus N5200 NAS box. The specs. for the Thecus NAS box says it supports Active Directory. Does Windows storage server 2003 R2 support shares on a NAS appliance not directly attached as DAS/SAN to use with DFS? I am planning to use DFS to replicate data between the above setup and main office DAS system. Regards Robert Vilhelmsen

What exactly does that mean? What OS does it run? Why would you need WSS if you had this device, anyway? WSS itself is designed to *be* network attached storage. > > Does Windows storage server 2003 R2 support shares on a NAS appliance > not directly attached as DAS/SAN to use with DFS? Highly doubtful (iscsi maybe!). I don't even think you could do this with regular old Windows server, but Windows Storage Server is a cheaper & OEM-only version of Windows server, really -- and is hence probably fairly crippled. I'm not sure there's a newsgroup for it, either - the vendors are supposed to supply support. If Dell can't help you out, you might see whether there's any help from your preferred reseller - perhaps they have insider info. > > I am planning to use DFS to replicate data between the above setup > and main office DAS system. No idea myself, but if you don't get an answer from this group you might want to ask at microsoft.public.windows.server.dfs_frs -- Chris.

Well mostly because I need some cheap storage in the remote office. And Dell has this WSS box really cheap. Cheaper than buying the CAL´s I need here. >> >> Does Windows storage server 2003 R2 support shares on a NAS appliance >> not directly attached as DAS/SAN to use with DFS? > > Highly doubtful (iscsi maybe!). No DAS, Direct Attached System via SCSI interface. But anyway I dont think it will be supported either, as I guess WSS need direct access and control over the volume and this can only be done via iSCSI or fibre SAN. Robert

Sorry, my bad;. I see typos everywhere. I would just have called it "local storage" or "external SCSI array" or something, I guess. Too many d__d abbreviations in this industry. I suspect you're out of luck, but again, WSS is its own beast. > > But anyway I dont think it will be supported either, as I guess WSS > need direct access and control over the volume and this can only be > done via iSCSI or fibre SAN. Hmmm. Again, I'd call Dell for presales tech support with this - OEM stuff is supposed to be supported by the OEM guy. :) > > Robert
