Hi everyone had this problem for a while, but as been as I'm new here thought that it would be a good place to start with.

Right I'm running a AMD 64 duel core CPU on a Abit AN52 mother board with an Nvidia Gforce 8400 GS graphics card using Vista ultimate 32 bit OS with 2 Gig of RAM and a Dell E773p monitor

problem is that everytime I reboot the pc the screen resolution and refresh rate resets to 800 X 600 and the refresh rate resets to 60 Hertz

Call me idle but I find having to set it back to 1024 X 768 at 75 Hertz annoying

I've tried updating and reinstalling the drivers, and deleting them totally before reinstalling them, searching the net I've found that this seems to be a common problem with Nvidia and Vista but no one seems to have an answer yet!

just wondering if anyone can shed some light on this problem whether or not it is a Vista problem or if there is something in the Bio's that can be change to resolve it

Thanks in advance to anyone who posts a reply. :)

Sorry the news is bad tried un-installing the old drivers installing the new, still the same, resets the screen settings on re-boot :(

Sorry Goku wish it was that simple, yes it sets the size/refresh rate but as soon as I reboot it reverts back to 800 X 600 at 65 hertz :( I go through that procedure a lot except I normally just right click on the Desktop, at first I thought it might be because of a conflict between the vista and Nvidia control panels, but I was told that the Nvidia control panel just links to the vista settings.

That's a very good link from Goku, don't you think Barry? ;)

OK Match. Are you using a docking station? Have you tried disabling the screen saver and see if the problem persists? Do other custom settings retain themselves after a restart?

Right just disabled the screen saver, no good, as for the Docking station its in a tower system not a laptop, if that's what you meant by docking station?

O and yes It's just the screen settings that are resetting as far as I know. or can tell.

My daughter has a vista box and had the monitor plug in the normal blue vga connector and was getting a kind of error message that indicated it should have been plugged into the DVI socket as that was what the board was configured for.

The drivers that you listed sound more like MOBO drivers than GPU drivers.

Tell us EXACTLY what drivers you have installed and where from please.

Sounds like you are installing DELL onboard drivers (which is no good as you need the NVIDIA ones as you are using an add in card)

The Graphics card driver is:

Provider NVIDIA

Driver Date 14/1/2009

Driver Version 7.15.11.8122

The monitor Driver is:

Provider Dell Inc

Driver Date 3/10/2003

Driver Version 1.0.0.0

The Nvidia driver is the one you linked me to yesterday and the Dell monitor driver is from the dell site. However I only installed the monitor driver after this problem started, till then it was a Generic monitor driver.

the thing is Wolfeymole mentioned an error which reminded me that the first time it happened I got an error message in the boot up screens, thing is though I never got chance to read it and I don't know what I'm looking for in the Bio's, and its not happened again since.

Does you MOBO have onboard GPU?

easiest way to tell is whip the add in card out and power up - does it boot up and can you see anything on screen?

Well lol if I whip out the Nvidia card I will get no signal displayed on the monitor. I know this because the only two ports I have to plug the monitor into are on the card

Hi as events unfold life gets interesting? what happened is I picked up a nasty little bug through windows live messenger and ended up formatting C, just to make sure. however curiously when I reinstalled, my graphics card now thinks I have now got two monitors!, and low and behold the problem is solved.

If any one can offer an explanation, or even better tell me how to fool it into thinking it has two monitors without having to reinstall again, that would be great. but for now I'm just going to leave it alone :)
