DHCP scope getting very small

Hi all

I have a win 2003 server that has DHCP on it. The scope is from

192.168.150.130 to 192.168.150.200. There is about 5 ip's left and than the

scope is used up. What will happen when i add a pc and there is no IP's left

in the scope and secondly how do i make the scope bigger. e.g instead of

stopping at .200 make it till .250

Thanks in advance

Re: DHCP scope getting very small

Hi Austin

Thanks for your reply. I had that doc yes but it doesn't tell mw how to

expand the current scope that i have. It tell me how to do "Resubnetting"

and "Superscoping" which is if i understand it correctly when your scope is

full and CANNOT be expanded. My scope CAN be expanded as it only starts at

..130 and continue to .200. - How do i get it to start at 1 for example and

end at 250?

Re: DHCP scope getting very small

That depends on your subnet mask.

What is your subnet mask?

In that case, change your start and end addresses. Your IP range is

x.x.x.1 - x.x.x.254

Re: DHCP scope getting very small

Run Dhcpmgmt.msc

Rt click the DHCP node and add your dhcp server.

Expand the + sign

Rt Click "Scope" and choose properties

Edit your Start and End IP range in the General Tab.

OPEN DHCP, select your active SCOPE, in the SCOPE, right click the

SCOPE, not the pool, you should have a start/end boxes - change it,

restart DHCP.

Make sure that you don't expand it into used addresses by other devices.

Hi, i got it thanks

I saw on that same dialogue box at the bottom it says "Lease duration for

DHCP clients" is set to maks 8 days - does this mean that a pc will keep his

IP a max of 8 days and then change it automatically or when does a pc

actually change his IP when he is on DHCP

please go do some reading. you are asking very simple questions that to be

perfectly honest you should know the answers to before you attempt to

administer a dhcp server

Troy

Don't what is wrong but you seem upset and if you feel like that don't

answer posts in a newsgroup. That is simple questions questions yes but they

are not properly answered in documents. They seem to be to simple to be

answered. I have seen much more simple questions in NG's in my field that i

help people with and not insult them like you do as i'm sure they want to

learn the same like you do.

BTW, it probably took you longer to write the sentence than to give the

answer :-( and NG are there to ask QUESTIONS (easy or difficult) and if you

don't wanna answer them don't read them.

Re: DHCP scope getting very small

DHCP clients normally request renewal of their existing lease when it is 50%

expired, so 4 days in the default case. This results in clients having a

stable IP address.

However, somewhere in the DHCP options (scope options?) there is a check box

labelled 'relinquish lease on shutdown?' - this will usually over-ride a

lease duration measured in days.
