Guest mlai Posted November 6, 2007 Posted November 6, 2007 Something strange just happened in the last week or so. I have a lightweight server running 2003SP2 on my office LAN. The server has been up and running for the past couple of years and had no backup problems until a week ago. The server has been backup to to a USB hard disk which is filling up. So I bought a new 750GB USB (WD My Book) and connected to the server for backup. The backups are completed fine but when the verification starts after the backup, the event log will be filled with ftdisk and ntfs errors pointing to the USB hard disk. I had tried a Seagate Freeagent Pro 750 instead and the same thing happens. Backup will be successful and everything working as long as the verify option is turned off for backups. When this happens, I typically reboots the server and the usb disk will come back as unknown device in the device manager. (same symptom with both the WD and seagate). At this point I will need to unplug power to the usb disk and reattach to the server for it to show up correctly again. I did hardware diagnostics on the system and all the drives and everything came up clean and working fine. I am completely baffled. One thing that I noticed is that when the backup is starting, I have a VSS error 12289 in the event log. All my research on this error on the net seems to indicate that this error can be safely ignored as the shadow copy services are started subsequently with no errors. So, any insight to this? Unlikely to be any disk problem as they all passed the relevant diagnostics from the manufacturers. No other usb errors which indicate usb controller problems. And no other significant application and system event errors either..... I am at wits end.....
Guest Ken Zhao [MSFT] Posted November 7, 2007 Posted November 7, 2007 RE: Verify option with Ntbackup caused disk errors on my Sever 2003.... Hello, Thank you for using newsgroup! From your post, for the VSS event error 12289, this is a issue with VSS and the SCM changes after applying Windows Server 2003 SP1. The default SCManager ACL was tightened up in SP1 so that non-interactive users couldn't enumerate services remotely (which was one of the top techniques used by hackers to infiltrate a network). The error means absolutely nothing and can be ignored. For ftdisk and ntfs errors pointing to the USB hard disk in event log, could you let us now the detailed event error description so that we can perform further research? Guest mlai Posted November 7, 2007 Posted November 7, 2007 Re: Verify option with Ntbackup caused disk errors on my Sever 2003.... I took some risk and went into the BIOS of the server and checked the settings. On that server, I discover a setting of "Support for Legacy USB Hard Disk" was set to enabled. I disabled that setting and am testing the server today. So far, no error due to ntbackup verification. What prompted me to check that was the fact that upon further testing, the server had trouble performing sustained read operations from the USB hard disks, even though the physical hard disk itself has been tested and certified to be ok. So will let you know if this fixes the problem.... Guest Brains,None Posted November 7, 2007 Posted November 7, 2007 Re: Verify option with Ntbackup caused disk errors on my Sever 2003.... Dear sir, I had a problem with a usb "nearline" storage drive until we put a usb 2.0 card in to speed things up, we were using 1.0!!!! never saw another error again... j. mlai wrote: > I took some risk and went into the BIOS of the server and checked the > settings. Guest mlai Posted November 8, 2007 Posted November 8, 2007 Re: Verify option with Ntbackup caused disk errors on my Sever 2003.... Yup. Same here. I disabled all legacy USB support and everything is fine now. Thanks. Guess it does pay to live on the cutting edge this time :) "Brains,None" <noone@overyonder.org> wrote in message news:uFAp7YVIIHA.6068@TK2MSFTNGP05.phx.gbl... > Dear sir, I had a problem with a usb "nearline" storage drive until we put > a usb 2.0 card in to speed things up, we were using 1.0!!!! > > never saw another error again... > > j. > > mlai wrote: >> I took some risk and went into the BIOS of the server and checked the >> settings.
