Print Spooler problem

2003 Terminal Server with XP clients. Users will say they can't print. I'll

look at Printers and Faxes, and many times the screen is blank. Other times

the printers are displayed. I stop/start the print spooler and the printers

are back. But unless the users log off and back on, they are not able to

print.

We have Brother, Epson, HP Laser Printer, HP DeskJet, and Lexmark printers

at client stations.

Periodically the spooler stops by itself, but I have recovery set to restart

on the first failure. The System log rarely shows the spooler shutting down.

I usually have to manually stop/start it myself. Lately when I stop the

spooler I get a spoolsv.exe application error - "The instruction at

"0x7c80eddf" referenced memory at "0.. address varies". The memory could not

be "read". Click OK to terminate the program.

Also some times Adobe acts like is going to create pdf, but does not.

Stop/Starting the spooler resolves this too.

May go a few days without a problem, or a few hours.

Any ideas?

Thanks.

Re: Print Spooler problem

This is most likely caused by a 3rd party printer driver which is

not TS compatible.

The remedy is to uninstall all 3rd party printer drivers and map

all printers that don't autocreate to a native printer driver on

the server, by creating a custom ntprintsubs.inf file. Details are

explained here (applies to 2003 as well):

1105, and 1106

You can check the recommended native driver substitution for your

local printers here:
