prodda Posted February 1, 2009 Posted February 1, 2009 I have 2 PC's and a laptop on a home wireless network. The network itself seems to be working fine but I can't acces the internet. My ISP is Vispa (they recently changed my static IP address so don't know if that has anything to do with it - I've asked but haven't received a response yet). Gateway/router is Linksys 354G Connection is currently wieless, although I have tried wired from the main PC to the gateway/router but it hasn't made any difference. I have tried WPA, WEP and 'no' encryption but it doesn't seem to make a difference PC and laptop are XP Pro SP2 and main PC is Vista Home Premium SP2. I'm using IE and/or Opera browsers The problem is that the LAN seems to be fine but when I try to access the internet it won't connect. I get messages like 'cannot communicate with primary DNS server' - all of the computers show 'local' or 'limited' connectivity. I've tried re-booting and re-setting the gateway but with no effect. All computers are experiencing exactly the same problem I have tried the 'ping' tests but they don't appear to be reaching the detination. KenB Posted February 1, 2009 Posted February 1, 2009 Hi, I think the problem lies with your router settings. The subnet mask ( 255.255.255.255 ) does not compare with the one showing on your computer ( 255.255.255.0 ) As far as I am aware - these should be the same. I have never seen a subnet mask of 255.255.255.255 .........it is usually the one showing on your computer. You could try resetting the router. The ISP provides the subnet mask - but I am sure that one ending in 255 is not a valid subnet. Your ISP will be able to confirm. Tootech Posted February 1, 2009 Posted February 1, 2009 The only thing I can see straight off is that all your PC's have 62.24.228.24 /25 and 192.168.1.1 set as the DNS servers. That means you have set them manually. Let Windows deal with it. Set all your IP addressing and DNS settings to automatic. Once you have done that, go to the LAN adapter, or wireless adapter and do a 'repair' - that will clear out all of the cached info. Your router seems connected up to the Internet ok. If you still can't get on the net, run command prompt and ping 192.168.1.1. If that is ok, then do another ping to a website like google Let us know how you get on. Quote
Tootech Posted February 1, 2009 Posted February 1, 2009 Ken, The router subnet will be different to the LAN subnets. This is because the router IP is a Wide Area Network - WAN address. The PC's are connected as a Local Area Network - LAN. The IP ranges and subnets are different. There's a Wiki page goes into some detail.. Classful network - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia There's alot of info there, perhaps too much, but it does list the different groups, which is what I was getting at :) Quote

prodda Posted February 2, 2009 Author Posted February 2, 2009 Just had a call back from my ISP and they tell me that the IP address that they gave me (217.32.26.223) was incorrect! They've allocated another one - I've now re-booted my router and everything seems to be OK Thanks for your help as always! Quote
