RAID 5 on Windows Server 2003

I know this has been talked about a lot! But I have a question that

hasn'y been answered in the forum.

Windows Server 2003 Specifications state that i can use ANY attached

drives to make my RAID, being 0 1 or 5.

So... can I use external hard drives to make this work?

I know it is not the BEST solution, but I would like to recycle the

material I have.

The short story....

We are setting up a Single Windows Server 2003 for our needs, in the

past we didnt use a server because we've grown fast and hardware was

not planned. Every person has their own Western Digital MyBook

external drive, 500Gb each... 8 Total.

if I wanted to use 4 of these to make a RAID 5 is it possible?

This is mostly a READ environment, so speed is not that important.

so, can this be done?

Thank you

Diego

For this to work the disks have to be dynamic. According to this article you

can convert external usb disks using the diskpart utility.

If that works you should then be able to create a raid array. Please don't

hold me to this and i wouldn't say it would be advisable to do. I am sure

you could get a cheat SATA card and three SATA disks to sort this out.

You would be better of without RAID and using the External drives to do

a backup. USB is problematic at best and it's VERY SLOW.

Buy proper hardware.
