Guest diegoarbe Posted November 7, 2007 Posted November 7, 2007 I know this has been talked about a lot! But I have a question that hasn'y been answered in the forum. Windows Server 2003 Specifications state that i can use ANY attached drives to make my RAID, being 0 1 or 5. So... can I use external hard drives to make this work? I know it is not the BEST solution, but I would like to recycle the material I have. The short story.... We are setting up a Single Windows Server 2003 for our needs, in the past we didnt use a server because we've grown fast and hardware was not planned. Every person has their own Western Digital MyBook external drive, 500Gb each... 8 Total. if I wanted to use 4 of these to make a RAID 5 is it possible? This is mostly a READ environment, so speed is not that important. so, can this be done? Thank you Diego
Guest David Posted November 7, 2007 Posted November 7, 2007 Re: RAID 5 on Windows Server 2003 For this to work the disks have to be dynamic. According to this article you can convert external usb disks using the diskpart utility. http://en.wikibooks.org/wiki/Firewire_Software_RAID_using_Oxford_911_and_Windows_XP If that works you should then be able to create a raid array. Please don't hold me to this and i wouldn't say it would be advisable to do. I am sure you could get a cheat SATA card and three SATA disks to sort this out. You would be better of without RAID and using the External drives to do a backup. USB is problematic at best and it's VERY SLOW.
