Guest sh Posted November 7, 2007 Posted November 7, 2007 I get this when I stop a usb device using the Sefely Remove Hardware Icon. "An exception occurred while trying to run Shell32.dll, Control_RunDLL hotplug.dll" The device seems to be shut down but running the command Shell32.dll, Control_RunDLL hotplug.dll, and then trying to do anything in the pop-up generates the error every time. Any ideas what to check -- what reg key or file might be the prob?

Have the same problem but didn't find any solution yet.
Guest MrBuckDharma Posted January 5, 2008 Posted January 5, 2008 Re: Exception Shell32.dll, Control_RunDLL hotplug.dll I found the answer here: 'exception shell32.dll control_rundll hotplug.dll - SpeedGuide.net Broadband Community' (http://forums.speedguide.net/showthread.php?t=233888) The directions didn't 100% work for me, here is what I did: Click on control panel icon click on system icon click "hardware" tab click "device manager" button click on "view" menu item...show hidden devices scroll down, double-click on "storage volumes" From there, I just right-clicked on the last volume and chose "update driver" let it connect to the internet, and this fixed it. ----------------------------- And like the guy mentioned in the other forum, I recently (4 days ago) starting using Acronis true-image 11, and that's around the time I started having this problem. A week earlier, I installed the version that came free with my new seagate harddrive, and used it to format some drives (internal and external, at the end it said something about sychronizing drives to system, which I didn't like seeing). Then 4 days ago I completely redid my C drive, and never installed any acronis, but I did boot from it to make/mount ghost copies of the C drive. A few minutes ago I tried the above solution, and no longer get the annoying sequence of error dialogs. -- MrBuckDharma
Guest MrBuckDharma Posted February 13, 2008 Posted February 13, 2008 Re: Exception Shell32.dll, Control_RunDLL hotplug.dll I just formatted an internal HD and an external usb HD using my Acronis True Image 11 Home CD and again I'm getting An exception occurred while trying to run "shell32.dll,Control_RunDLL hotplug.dll" when I try to remove my flash drive. I don't have Acronis installed, I just booted from the CD to format my drives. Acronis is also not honoring my rebate, saying the upc code is wrong, even though the form (which I still have) says the rebate is for Acronis True Image 11 Home. Again, here is how you fix the problem: Click on control panel icon click on system icon click "hardware" tab click "device manager" button click on "view" menu item...show hidden devices scroll down, double-click on "storage volumes" Right click on any drive with a letter and choose "Update driver" and let it search the internet (this time I had two, it didn't work after doing just one, or maybe it's because I also restarted after doing the second one). -- MrBuckDharma

I use Acronis 11 and have had it installed for a long time, so I did not think it was related to that. I followed the quoted procedure, but instead of "updating the drivers" I clicked on the Uninstall icon for each volume listed. Windows rebooted, rebuilt its database, wanted to reboot again so I did. The problem disappeared and everything works fine again. I found the quoted fix on many forums and chose this one to add my experience. Hope this helps someone and other forums also pick it up.
